Any and all possibilities are juicy.
Considering Lynch just oversaw and approved a new 4K HDR presentation of Mulholland Drive for StudioCanal, I can definitely see it coming soon from Criterion.

So many options. So many dreams…but who is the dreamer? And is the dream wet?

I'm glad to see Criterion enter 4K, and is one of the reasons I stopped opening any newly bought Criterion Blu's over the last year or so, unless they were way more obscure titles that I would guess would never get a 4K. I knew they'd get into the "upgrade" market one day (and it took forever), and although I love having the best version, my wallet surely doesn't.

But if it's "Tree of Life" or some other ones mentioned here, I will be able to upgrade and then sell off my still-sealed Blu-ray way easier and get most of my $$$ back more than if it was an opened copy. Crazy to buy stuff and keep them sealed, but I have hundreds of titles still unwatched anyway, and am really sick of double and triple and quadruple dipping.

I always thought the first UHD would be big like Kurosawa or reacquiring the original two of Kane and Kong.
But I could also totally see it being Armageddon as a joke for those who always questioned it being in the collection-compete with Kevin Smith commentary “yo f*** UHD maaan”

Cut to us buying the inevitable flood of UHD reissues of 4k restored titles we bought on bd….

Having intentionally sat out Criterion collecting after buying four last year and then almost immediately seeing two of them receive 4K UHDs from their studios with all the Criterion extras ported over, all for either the same price or cheaper, this news may lead me to reconsider and give Criterion a second chance. Curious if they'll maintain the same plain, clear case aesthetic as their blu-rays or try something new for their UHDs.

What two titles are you referring to?

Dr. Strangelove and The Princess Bride. Though I may have misremembered whether or not the latter ported all the extras, I know that the former did.

Not the 50s, but I would buy Onibaba.

I know, just release the damn film already! It's my favorite Douglas Sirk film. Knowing Criterion they're probably waiting for Universal to restore it. Hopefully that ends up happening and it's not a Magnificent Obsession type situation. I actually ended up passing on buying that one due to the fact it's barely an upgrade. You can tell it's a dated/old HD master, especially when you compare it to the terrific restoration of All That Heaven Allows.

I still think at some point Criterion will release "West Side Story" in 4K...
Maybe it's just a dream

I hope it's a title that hasn't already been released on Blu-ray with a 4k transfer.

Mulholland Dr seems like a very safe bet for all the reasons others have listed and more.

Given what we already know in regards to Criterion's attitude toward 4K in general (you need a projector to see the difference har har har) there's a 0.0% chance that their debut UHD will be anything in the realm of black & white photography.

Did we ever definitively find out if they regained the rights to RAN? I'm planning on importing the StudioCanal UHD but it would be nice to see it included in a potential Kurosawa box down the line.

I think there's a very, very strong chance of that and I honestly kinda hope it is so the remaining skeptics can have a basis for comparison. HDR makes all the difference.

I'd kill for a Lars Von Trier 4K collection that includes The Element of Crime.

My Guesses...

1. Silence of The Lambs - 1991 = exactly 30 years
2. Dazed and Confused - 1993 = 28 years

Would love it to be Dazed and Confused but Sex, Lies and Videotape just got announced as a 4K release overseas by anothet label, so I would put my money on that.
