I unironically love Peyton Place! Definitely need to rewatch it amd finally give the Blu Ray a go!

In total agreement with the score!

I usually don't get a response from Criterion, but I decided to reach out to them this past weekend about Japanese cinema and got a response today. I mentioned the titles THE DEMON, THE BAD SLEEP WELL, DEMON POND, and HUNTER IN THE DARK and was told Criterion has no plans to release any of these in the foreseeable future. I know it's probably just a stock answer, but was really hoping DEMON POND was on the slate since it has a 4K restoration. I had also asked about Japanese films in general, but was simply directed to their website to check the current Japanese titles they have for sale.

Criterion are very tight-lipped about their releases, so even if it was planned for December, and announcing in a few days, they wouldn't say anything.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other melodramas? Bonus if it's from another country.[/QUOTE]

Not from other countries. but I would recommend, THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT (underrated and really entertaining) , ONE WAY PASSAGE ( a beautifully made, wonderfully concise Hollywood Classic), REMEMBER THE
NIGHT (would melt a heart of stone) and both the sound and silent versions of STELLA DALLAS.

Yeah, I remember asking them about what's going on with CURE and they were like "we have no plans for this at this time" or something along the lines. Took another 6 months or or so to finally get announced, but it happened.

One of the reasons I enjoy movie groups is being introduced to new films. I'll add this to my wishlist and check it out.

Nicholas Ray's "In a Lonely Place" with Bogart and Gloria Grahame is one of my absolute favorite film noir!

I love Valley of the Dolls. It's one of my favorites. Patty Duke is my queen in that movie. Queen Christina is awesome too. I didn't really "get" Garbo at first. But then I saw "Queen Christina." I "get" her now. You can't take your eyes off her when she's on screen.

Peyton Place is awesome! I love sappy melodramas, the more plot lines, the better. Peyton Place, A Summer Place, and Written on the Wind are three of my favorite melodramas. At this year's TCM Film Festival, Russ Tamblyn appeared in person to talk about Peyton Place. I unfortunately missed the screening, because it was at the same time as something else we attended. But we did see Tamblyn again when he also appeared in person to discuss Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

That and Ninotchka, there is great chemistry between her and Melvyn Douglas.

Camille, I feel I need a respirator when I'm watching it.

I've seen films from Opuls and Minnelli mentioned on this page, but not these gems, from Olive and WAC, respectively:

I'd also like to give a shout out to this great 50s mélange of film noir and small-town melodrama (You can probably find Eureka's release for cheaper, but I believe they're both OOP):

Yeah, unfortunately it's with the Mouse which means its 99.999% unlikely it gets another release. I would also recommend it, I have the Australian release which is essentially the Eureka disc:

As of right now, there's a decently priced listing on eBay for the Australian Blu, which I mention in case someone is interested in the film since it's probably cheaper than the Twilight Time or Eureka versions.

You can't talk melodrama and not start stacking up the Vincent Minnelli movies. Sirk is undoubtedly the King of Melodrama, but Minnelli is the Queen (sorry, couldn't resist!). Movies like TEA AND SYMPATHY and TWO WEEKS IN ANOTHER TOWN and SOME CAME RUNNING are just dripping in melodrama and to top it off, Minnelli was also a visual genius. His melodramas play fair until their climaxes when they explode in style and bursting color and sounds. He made all sorts of great films in nearly every genre, but his melodramas rank among the best ever made anywhere.

The Australian disc isn't "essentially" the Eureka disc, it is the Eureka disc. Has the logo and everything.

Any guesses on #1200?

The only prediction I'll make is that it will be released 3 months from today on 12/12/23.

My top 3 guesses are:

Pinocchio (2022) 4K
Isle of Dogs 4K
Ozu Collection

There's been rumblings of a new Godzilla set comng (Heisei and/or Millenium) but it's probably much too early for that. The Showa era was spine 1,000.

Those sound more reasonable than my hopes for a Twin Peaks set that came about because of Mark Frost's Twitter activity.
Maybe even a Wes Anderson 4K set could be on the cards, we know Rushmore has a 4K master.
