Apparently November is gonna just be like 4 upgrades and 4 other highly requested titles and some box sets. Gonna be a real party.

I'm curious what Olive Films titles Criterion has acquired but not yet released.

Imagine if Criterion actually releases a Kurosawa UHD boxset with the following movies:

- Stray Dog

- Rashomon

- Ikiru

- Seven Samurai

- Throne of Blood

- The Hidden Fortress

- Yojimbo

- Sanjuro

- High and Low

- Red Beard

- Kagemusha

If I'm not mistaken, all of these have 4K restorations.

Tbh I always figured Patton would be really into film and stuff - I think all around he has pretty solid tastes. Like I know he’s referenced Hubert Selby Jr in his standup, who is my favorite author (who, besides the Requiem for a Dream adaptation he doesn’t get enough love), so I always had it in the back of my mind he’d have similar tastes in film too. That said, definitely didn’t expect him to choose Dekalog, even seemed like we had the same experience and reaction too it too. I’d love to hear him talk more about film, though lol.

What I would give to see this get some Criterion love...

This film deserves much more than a barebones release, although I am thankful to Olive that it was released at all.

In the entertainment biz that's what we would call a First Day Buy!

I remember him being a guest programmer alongside Robert Osborne on TCM roughly 10 years ago. Two of the four picks were The Wind Journeys and Aaltra. Titles that were unknown to me and I ended up enjoying them both. I was quite impressed with his knowledge of film and also just listening to the two of them discussing the four picks that he chose.

Oswalt's funny riff on Death Bed made me go and buy the film on DVD (warning:language):

Not sure what the chances are, but I was under the impression Criterion would eventually put out

Spellbound (1945)
California Split (1974)
The Last Wave (1977)
Missing (1982)
Hard Eight (1996)

Criterion have been including more podcasts recently.

It’s just a YouTube video.

I’m teasing, just making light of the very heavy predictions I’ve seen for November.

Has Criterion ever "stolen" a title from Kino? For example: Kino releases an UHD of a given film, and Criterion later releases an UHD of the same film?

Do you guys see Criterion releasing in UHD some titles that Kino has already released in UHD? Maybe to add HDR, more extras and so on, after Kino's license to a given title expires?

That doesn't happen. Criterion has released many Blu-ray titles that Kino upgraded to UHD (The Silence of the Lambs, In the Heat of the Night, Some Like It Hot, etc.) but never a separate UHD release before. I doubt the distribution contracts that Criterion and Kino received from these companies would allow both of them to release UHD (Criterion were probably given the rights to the film on Blu-ray only whereas Kino gets the UHD).

But if it's after Kino's license expires, then maybe Criterion will release these UHDs but I have a feeling these won't be coming out for a while regardless.
