i'd not actually recognised her name before, especially as a director, but then i think most names don't stick with westerners ... however, i think appearance of such good work shows there's always far more surprises out there that should always help us avoid just treading the same ground again and again, forever.

i'm hoping, expecting, there's far more surprises to come from eclipse. a few sets i'd upgrade, but probably infinitely more that are like this one.

That release already exists! Criterion's HIS GIRL FRIDAY BD includes the superior to the previously available (and 4K restored) American release version of THE FRONT PAGE (1931). Along with two radio adaptations of The Front Page (1937 and 1946). Easier to do since both films are PD>

If you want to include the 1974 version you'd have to make it a triple feature. However, Kino has an in print BD of THE FRONT PAGE (1974). Given all their other Billy Wilder releases I'm guessing Kino's not giving that up anytime soon.

All three of them exist; that's the point of the comparison.

With the Spielberg/Scorsese version of Cape Fear in production at Apple TV (a very loose adaptation with Javier Bardem as Max Cady), I suspect strongly everyone involved wants those releases tied to this series coming out - much like how the 4k of High and Low is coming out roughly the same time as the Spike Lee version.

Site review up for About Dry Grasses:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/About...342467/#Review

Interesting that the first(?) NBC release on Criterion comes on their contemporaries label and eschews the more meaty extras like the feature-length behind the scenes of his films that have come on previous blu-ray releases.

Yeah, that's one notable downside to their shift to the Janus Contemporaries (now Criterion Premieres) line in my opinion. A lot of the titles would have gotten better Criterion releases, and perhaps in cases like About Dry Grasses, even a 4K disc as well. I'm glad they at least made an exception for Flow, but there should have been others before that too.

With regards to Ceylan, I do hope one day Criterion can work with Cinema Guild to get releases of The Wild Pear Tree, and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.

Does the Pedicab Driver on Criterion Channel open with the Janus/Criterion logo?

I think some of these will happen as November usually has big titles. Really hoping for the Sword trilogy as November seems like a good spot for it.

I know that box set was just announced, but would love more Truffaut films, especially 4K upgrades of well… anything. Especially would love Shoot the Piano Player that is stuck on dvd.

Also, would love to have them bring in more Indian movies other than Satyajit Ray

After rewatching Late Spring, I realized that it and am sure other Ozus need a new restoration and release, would love that.

Pedicab Driver is owned by Warner (part of the small group of Golden Harvest titles they own that didn't go to Fortune Star)

It's tricky with recent movies, isn't it? Like, I think with everything that went down around the film, and the special edition that never materialized, it would've been better off if Blue is the Warmest Color had wound up in Criterion Premieres. Heck, even going back to Criterion LD days, I'm very dubious about the merits of Bodies, Rest and Motion or Five Corners ever having wound up in the collection proper.

I feel like it should take extraordinary agreement/prestige/acclaim for a brand new film to get whisked to the front of the line for a coveted Criterion slot.

Honestly, the only ones that are confirmed are these titles.

House Party UHD
Abbas Kirostami set
?
?
?
?
?
?
?
So I don't know what the rest of these titles are going to be. So I'm not guessing anything so I'm just putting question marks instead as each month has been quite random this year. Only October was incredibly obvious with literally one unexpected title in there that being Deep Crimson, and I guess maybe two with Altered States. Also I think Lolita, and Eyes Wide Shut aren't coming till next year not that I care I have no interest in buying either of them.

No, but for the last couple of years it seems they have been releasing a Hong Kong title/set in November or December and I figure Mr. Vampire series is more of an October thing.

Out of all of my guesses it is based on the least evidence. In fact, except for Pedicab and Empire of the Sun, all of those titles I guessed are confirmed to be with Criterion.

I hope both versions of Cape Fear get their own releases. I'm not a fan of the 1991 version and would be annoyed if Criterion only released the Scorsese remake and used the original 1962 movie as a "bonus feature".

I suspect Criterion has acquired the rights to the Truffaut films Kino is losing and is planning a big Truffaut set.

As for non-Ray Indian films, they did mention a few years ago that they're working on a Bollywood box set.

I suspect VERY strongly that both versions will get their own due, since they're both widely acclaimed classics in their own right. It's not really a situation like Basquiat where the director is deemphasizing one version (which was a questionable choice on all parts), or Texasville, which was a curio with middling reviews and very dubious source material to work with.

(My one other insistence is that they include the Cape Fear Sideshow Bob episode from the Simpsons as an extra on the Scorsese disc. Non-negotiable.)

I hope they get separate releases as well. I like them both and would buy both releases, but I prefer the 1991 version.

Yes! "Cape Feare" must be included, but it's with Fox unfortunately. One of the best episodes of the show!

With the November slate to be announced this week I’m guessing either Dog Day Afternoon or All The Presidents Men will be released. They usually announce big titles during July and November for the B&N sale.

Eyes Wide Shut would be a great holiday season release.
