I doubt The English Patient is coming out this month this might be saved for next year most likely. I also don't see Four Nights of a Dreamer either it doesn't seem like a film on Criterions Blu-Ray upgrade radar right now. Also I think our big silent film will get revealed this month most likely The Wind.

If they're able to pry anything out of the Mouse House, please let it be the Borzage silents - Seventh Heaven, Street Angel, and Lucky Star.

I would love a George Stevens set. Maybe they could get "Alice Adams" in there, or "Vivacious Lady." Though putting the two Jean Arthur films together makes sense.

I would also love the Harold Lloyd films and the "Trouble in Paradise" upgrade. I also love Errol Flynn, so "Captain Blood" would be a definite purchase.

Basically, I want Criterion to release more Classic Hollywood. I have purchased almost every one they've released.

Just going with one film that has been predicted by others, that I'd like to see among the next set of Criterion US title announcements, All the President's Men. Don't have any prior physical media releases of it (if a Criterion release happens, I hope all previous extras are ported over).

It may not be December, but my feeling is Criterion will put this on the schedule sooner than later. It is a rare Bresson film newly restored in 4k and as far I as I know has not been available in the U.S. for a while.

Vimeo to be acquired by Bending Spoons in $1.38B all-cash deal

Video platform Vimeo announced on Wednesday that it has agreed to be acquired by Bending Spoons, one of Europe’s largest mobile app developers, in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $1.38 billion...Bending Spoons has a pattern of acquiring companies, then laying off staff and cutting features. For example, Bending Spoons acquired note-taking and task management app Evernote in 2022, after which the company laid off most of its U.S. and Chile staff and moved operations to Europe in 2023. Evernote then shut down the Linux and older legacy versions of the app, and then proceeded to place heavy restrictions on the app’s free tier in 2024.

In another example, Bending Spoons acquired WeTransfer in July 2024 and then laid off 75% of its staff a few weeks after. A couple months later, WeTransfer began limiting free users to 10 transfers per month.

Nothing left to ruin on Vimeo - it already cut its infrastructure down to nothing a year or two back and all free services - switching from 'indie YouTube' and a platform for shorts and showreels, like it was for its entire previous existence, to a video streaming backend services provider for corporate clients which I guess Criterion uses. It's transitioned into a version of AWS for small streaming services.

Vimeo provides services to Patreon, and individual Patreon users with anything more than minimal traffic are being forced onto hugely expensive corporate Vimeo accounts they can't possibly afford. That's the current Vimeo scandal - they are rinsing down anybody caught in their monopoly, so an alternative is bound to appear, making their company - and Bending Spoons' acquisition - worthless.

The new October to December Film Forum schedule (PDF) has now been posted. The most exciting screenings as far as Criterion goes are new releases of Viridiana (1961), and Charade (1963) from new 4K restorations. Additionally, Darling (1965) will also be screened from its 4K restoration. Criterion put that one out on LaserDisc, so hopefully it's one they get back as well (Studiocanal have already released it on 4K internationally). There's also a big French Heist retrospective, which is in part celebrating the 70th anniversary of Rififi.

I was predicting Criterion would release DARLING as it's an Embassy Pictures release (US rights are with MGM) so glad I was not off base.
