Another good list to look at if you're having a hard time picking out which Criterions to buy.

I'm not a big fan of Bevret's criticism, so...

Plus, those wouldn't crack my personal top 15. They are definitely all safe choices though.

No Red Desert, Solaris, Last Year at Marienbad, Blow Out, Lola Montes, Harakiri, Music Room, Thin Red Line, Last Temptation of Christ.....,....renders the list an epic fail.

I have to agree.

Why is 8 1/2 and Breathless always considered the 2 greatest films all the time!? (well, maybe they are). Or always at the top of the list? Meh.

Actually, he did include LYAM and TTRL on the page before (there are 2 pages in the article).

8 1/2 is understandable but as for Breathless, Godard made many superior films after it...

Breathless is the only Godard film I've seen so far and I didn't care for it. I was afraid that my opinion was an unpopular one.

Has there been a specific announcement of a new Barnes and Noble sale of Criterion titles? I haven't seen anything.

He does have some of those films listed as alternatives or at the end in his little wrap up as titles also worthy of consideration.

Also, it looks like his list is more of a suggestion for people maybe starting out, kind of an essentials list, as opposed to a personal top 15. Just like one might say Citizen Kane or the Godfather is the greatest movie ever made, it might not necessarily be their favorite.

I'm sure each of us here on this forum have different criteria for what constitutes a greatest or favorite Criterion list.

My 5 top Criterions probably sound boring (8 1/2, Rashomon, etc) so here are just 5 Criterions I recommend:

The Last Temptation of Christ - moving and powerful epic, which works both as a spiritual religious work as well as a drama
Naked - viciously intelligent dramatic thriller (or thrilling drama) following a drifter through the underbelly of London
Stagecoach - a delightful and thoughtful Western. perfect introduction to the genre
Tiny Furniture - pitch-perfect representation of American millennials, with all their strengths and weaknesses
Weekend (2011) - probably the best contemporary neorealist film I've seen, and a great love story

I hated 8 1/2. I'm not quite sure why it's so highly rated.

Also, I started watching Breathless but I wasn't into it so I shut it off. I'll have to retry it soon when I'm more in the mood for it.

That may be true, but none of them made the splash quite like Breathless. Its placement is warranted, even if you (or I) don't agree with it.
