A few weeks back, when I was admonished for discussing Under the Skin here in the thread, I briefly considered changing mine to an image of Scarlett from that movie, just as a show of solidarity. I like my current avatar too darn much, though.

Speaking of fat Welles, you could always go with the below image for an avatar, since the new Universal Blu-ray of Touch of Evil is so marvelous. Seeing the movie with the proper black levels on a transfer really makes a difference.

[Show spoiler]
I know some people are probably going to think "what?", but what movie is your avatar actually from? I've been meaning to ask for a while now, and this seems like a good time.

I can slide with mine since she has a film in the Collection (The Last Days of Disco).

For those of you near the Atlanta area, the tickets for the Fox Theatre Summer Film Festival are now onsale.

I'm going to see...

Gone with the Wind (July 27)
Double Indemnity (August 14)

I'm so excited about seeing Double Indemnity on the big screen at Fox that I want to do cartwheels around my office. A classic-era black-and-white film noir should look marvelous at the Fox.

Gone with the Wind is reserved seating, instead of general admission. I shelled out a few extra bucks for the center orchestra level, where the view should be perfect. I watched my Blu-ray of Gone with the Wind the other day, and was blown away, but this is a movie to see on a big screen.

I may end up buying tickets to more films in the lineup closer to date.

My avatar is from the 1947 film noir, Out of the Past, which recently dethroned Le Samouraï as my number one all-time favorite movie.

Sadly, Out of the Past is only out on DVD at present, but it's a sharp-looking DVD, and seeing it on a high definition television at last after having only previously viewed it on tube televisions kicked it to the top spot in a hurry. Jacques Tourneur was one of the greatest directors, from a visual perspective, and the movie features remarkable roles from Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, and Jane Greer.

A few weeks back, I found a cheap copy of the source novel, Build My Gallows High, by Daniel Mainwaring (under the pseudonym of Geoffrey Holmes). It's a great read, but Out of the Past benefits from snappy dialogue added by the screenwriters to make it one of the few film adaptations that is better than the book.

great avatar!

been thinking of swapping mine out.. will do it today maybe.

since we are talking about avatars... is hoyterdeen out there? I haven't been able to place his avatar although I saw that same pic in an article written about "the greatest films of all time." I haven't seen the movie, but my guess is Stalag 17? I have no idea.

hoyterdeen's avatar is The Thing from Another World (1951). It's a great movie, and it's begging for Blu-ray release. I still have my old DVD, and I occasionally make a triple feature day of The Thing from Another World, John Carpenter's The Thing, and The Thing (2011).

The best avatar on the site right now belongs to *PREACHER*. Scroll back a few pages to see what I mean.

yes, that is a good one. I never considered myself a fan of hers, but I think it is maybe because I didn't see the right films.. on my watchlist are Two For The Road and Sabrina.

he's not kidding. I found the seller you are talking about, Polaroid. I buy first and ask questions later... proceeded to by 3 Colors Trilogy for $6.47, but then cancelled it because I didn't realize that it is the DVD set... don't want it.

occasionally, items are mis-identified. there was a (relatively) cheap copy of Le Cercle Rouge on blu recently, but the fine print said it was the Studio Canal version even though it was listed under the Criterion item page

I've found that seller.
Showing the image for Criterion releases then saying it's "region 2" they're clearly DVD's.

You'll either receive the UK releases or pirated Criterion's.

I'd be very suspicious about buying them. Simply because, no one in their right mind would let Criterion releases go for so little. Unless they're utterly clueless.

Thumbs up for your new avatar, while we're on the subject. That's such a great scene, and I love the Miles Davis score.

suspicious? yes.. but, Amazon will back you up if there is a problem with the order. that storefront also has thousands of items for sale and very good feedback, so I don't think that they are pirated.

it does say 'region 2' which for DVDs was UK, right? so it means that it is classified wrong.

Amazon will refund if they are not as listed and Seller just told me if there is any problems I can get a refund

Ive bought off them in past and got legit Criterion release, just seems odd they would be listed as Criterion if they are not... can't hurt to order them though they are so cheap - either you'll get a great bargain or you'll need to get a refund lol.

But there prices are weird cause those DVD's were £5.88 earlier, so not sure whats happened lol

Sometimes Amazon prices glitch or mess up - but fingers crossed lol haha I want that Zatoichi set to be legit >.< Also, the seller has lots of great reviews all stating the order was as advertised lol who knows XD

But the seller does definitely sell Criterions so they could have messed up in region? seem more likely to mess up on region then the entire title :/

thanks, Owl. I guess I'm on an avatar world tour promoting titles that I'd most like to see upgraded. last was Ikiru and now Elevator to the Gallows.

my 4th different avatar and a trend. all 4 were publicity photos and not actual shots from the movies - I had the 2 Kim Novak pics from Vertigo before these recent two. I didn't plan it that way. I guess I was just drawn to these pics. I'm pretty sure this one wasn't a still from the film as I don't recall her smiling too much.

mostly..

Also best way to get refund with Amazon is file AZ claim, Ive had a lot of messed up orders and never been turned down a refund.

Plus seller has agree'd they'd refund if they are not as advertised lol and as Ive said, they do stock Criterions as I've ordered in past from them so I know they are a legit company unless someone has screwed up on pricing or naming them lol but I'm willing to take risk if I can get them ofr £5 lol including Zatoichi lol

Just checked the older order I did with them that was legit and they have also put wrong region on that too ?? and its definitely real lol

omg if this is legit I've just saved a fortune haha - they've dispatched anyway so here goes lol, from UK seller too so faster delivery, will keep you guys updated haha.

UPDATE

Just checked their store again and a lot of their stuff is unavailable, and all there Criterions are back at £20+ :O so it WAS a price glitch

Mine are preparing to dispatch :/ - not sure if they can cancel on there end now? Do they have to honour the price? I really think were caused a price glitch lol
