All I want that is OOP is The Last Year At Marienbad.

Then, of films not yet released, I want Mulholland Dr. -- but I've just given up on that. Why kid myself?

Oh well.

@Owl: Based on your opinion I tried, and maybe it's just me, but an hour in, I found John Wick a boring and nowhere as cool as it thinks it is movie.

As brilliant as I think John Wick is and as much as I respect Owl for mentioning it here I'm not sure the Criterion thread is one where a ton of potential John Wick fans would be hiding.

It's stylish action incredibly well filmed, but it ain't no art film.

I watched the Don't Look Now disc last night and it looks wonderful. I'd never particularly felt very much towards the film prior to last night (which must stand as my third or fourth screening of the film), but it really clicked for me this time. I suspect it's to do with the fact that I'm in a position of greater responsibility now than when I last saw it, meaning that I related to the subject of grief and loss more.

I'll be watching the extras this afternoon.

+1... As my old (directv) hd dvr's last act, I decided to watch for the first time ever for me both The Crowd and (what turned out to be the 4 hour version of) Greed. Turned into nearly an all-nighter, but figured who knows if/when they will ever show up on disc, or be aired on TCM again. So basically last call ended up being those two.

A couple hours later (this past Thursday morning) I had a brand new, empty () hd dvr. (Unlike the old one it replaced, though, it is totally quiet, has double the space, and so far (knock on wood) haven't had any audio or video glitches (minimal hours so far though so jury is still out... a new lnb may have also been installed, so perhaps between the two...).)

The Big Parade is already out on blu-ray, by the way.

Finally saw Raymond Bernard's Les Miserables (1934).

Absolutely fantastic movie. I remember going in thinking the running time was daunting, but it just flew by. I don't think any other version can compare.

In a way, it kind of reminded me of the Scrooge (1951) with Alastair Sim, which is my favorite version of A Christmas Carol.

Hoping that with the BFI Dreyer set coming out that Criterion upgrades the DVD box of Gertrud/Day of Wrath/Ordet, since they already released Master of the House separately. I figure since the blu masters are available, it's a pretty forgone conclusion an upgrade is coming, unless they lost the rights.

Oh, I'd absolutely love to see an upgrade to that set. What a great trio of films.

Then again, Dreyer.

Has anyone seen the Antoine Doinel set? What did you think of Jean-Pierre Leaud's acting? How old was he?

I recently saw him in Godard's "Masculine Feminin" and "Made in USA," as well as Truffaut's "American Night." In Godard's films, his performance was very wooden and he sounded as though he was reading/reciting his lines. His performance was not as wooden in Truffaut's film, but it did seem like it was a mistake to cast him. Later, it occurred to me that he rarely speaks in "400 Blows," so I don't know whether he didn't age well or could never do a speaking role well. His appearance did change between childhood and adulthood: he lost the cuteness and adorability he had when he played a 12 year-old.

Was he reciting lines that Godard read to him while the camera rolled?

If they lost the rights, then the DVD set would be OOP. Since it's not, I would assume that they haven't.

I guess that means I have a one film lead over you.

Time for us to figure out who can make it to 1,000 first.

For those that have seen Umberto D...

[Show spoiler]Is the end of the film, where he leaves his residence and tries to find a place for his dog before trying to commit suicide repeated at the beginning of the film? I ask because I had a recording of it from TCM and finally got around to watching it. I've never had any problems with watching films on TCM, but this didn't feel right. Their showing started with him right before he leaves his residence through the attempted suicide and even says "Fine" (30 minutes in, roughly) before then cutting to him claiming to be sick. This felt really out of place to me, but having not seen the film I went with it. But then after 30 minutes the film started to repeat scenes again, with the entire last 30 minutes being a repeat of the first. I'm pretty sure I missed the first third of it.

My mind wandered, and I lost track of my count. Twice. What distracted me both times was the number of films on the list that I would include on my personal Worst 100 Films List ... at least one of them would even make my Worst Ten!

But that's the fun thing about these lists ... that they encourage people to debate, to seek out or revisit, to re-evaluate, and to respond to films on a personal and/or artistic level. That's always a good thing!

Exact same thing happened to me! This is from when it aired like a month ago? About 5-10 minutes in, I paused it and scanned through the synopsis on Wikipedia (thinking, did I miss a ton? Why am I so confused? Haha). Maybe their broadcast timing got thrown off or something, but when I started it on Hulu+ it took about an hour to get to where my TCM recording started!
