Le Amiche is one of my least favourite Antonionis (its better than La Signora Senza Camelie but worse than the others I've seen). There's little of the creativity and art that make his later films so great. Its nothing to hurrah about in my opinion. You guys probably feel different.

The Masters of Cinema version of Fantastic planet is the one to buy. 56 page booklet+5 short films (only 1 on the Criterion)+the same Laloux documentary+it's far cheaper. One of those short films on the MOC edition is How Wang-Fo was Saved which is equally as good as Fantastic Planet. Can't speak about the PQ quality, but I think the MOC looks really good as is.

If the 4K transfer makes a huge difference, I'll probably bite, so I'll wait for the review first.

100%. The transfer will have to be a LOT better than MoC to make a double-dip appeal and the MoC already looks great. Losing "Wang-Fo" among others is a big downer.

Yeah, me too.
The Criterion release should have a substantial difference in quality with the Eureka one (and be properly encoded) to make me choose it.

Wow, had forgotten today was the 15th. My company has been in reaccreditation mode all week, so I've been buried. This was a nice surprise to see when I popped on the site today. Fantastic Planet, Dr. Strangelove and Clouds of Sils Maria.... holy crap. So awesome, gotta start saving up now.

Anyone here have the 45th Anniversary Dr. Strangelove digibook release? Looks like there will be different bonus features on both. Guess I'll happily be doing the double dip for this.

I'm most excited about Clouds. It never showed here (or if it did I blinked and missed it).

Strangelove seems superfluous but I guess an OOP film could go into much worse hands than Criterion.

Maybe they are testing the waters to see if more people buy the old DVDs when upgrades are not taken for granted.

Ohh well, the ones with good sources will have to come sooner or later so it's just a matter of waiting I guess.

I checked all the year announced titles and it is interesting that each month there is at least one title that could be called an upgrade of sorts:

January
Inside Llewyn Davis (over Sony BD)

February
The Graduate (LD upgrade and over MGM BD)

March
Bicycle Thieves (Dvd upgrade)
The Manchurian Candidate (over MGM BD)

April
Only Angels have Wings (over Turner BD)

May
The Player (LD upgrade and over New Line Cinema BD)

June
Here Comes Mr. Jordan (LD upgrade)
Dr. Strangelove (LD upgrade and over Sony BD)

I guess the disappointing part is that Bicycle Thieves and Here Comes Mr. Jordan are the only instances were there was no previous blu available.

Fantastic Planet? alright! one of my favorite animated movies and sci-fi movies since i was a kid.

Sounds awesome.

Come on Criterion, now do Gandahar aka Lightyears and you can make Laloux fans like me feel alive and good! a new restored version of Gandahar would be the bee's knees and would look better than all those bootleg DVDs fans held on to waiting for a US release.

I also want American Pop on SE Criterion blu-ray which is another cool adult animated cult classic that deserves a SE treatment with new 2K or 4K scan and all that.

Is it weird that my three favorite releases of the year have been upgrades of existing Blu-ray releases?

The Graduate, The Manchurian Candidate, and now Dr. Strangelove.

Regarding animation on blu-ray, I'm very happy to see Fantastic Planet on the new releases list.

Another animation piece that I hope hasn't been forgotten is The Point! (written by and music by Harry Nilsson). I'm guessing it might be considered too childish/"Schoolhouse Rock-ish" for Criterion (even though this was made before there even was a Schoolhouse Rock). Still, I wish somebody would release it. (It screams late 60s/early 70s.)

A small 2+ minute clip from the movie, which might be considered a spoiler:

Besides all the quirky animation, according to the imdb.com website, there are 4 differently narrated versions. (... Dustin Hoffman, Alan Barzman, Alan Thicke and Ringo Starr). I'd love to see a release that included each version as an option.

Both Gandahar and Time Masters would make me very happy

Not Criterion and not Blu, but I purchased this inexpensively from Walmart for $5 last year. It's not too much more on Amazon.

I'm definitely in for Dr. Strangelove! Glad I held off on buying it before.

Fantastic Planet also looks interesting and I still haven't seen Clouds of Sils Maria.
