Btw, there was a review on this very site of the French release which uses the same transfer:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-T...130550/#Review
I couldn't get this review to come up in a search, but makes me want to sell my Criterion version (for big money). Depends on the special features the Criterion version has vs this edition, I'd have to review that first though. But if a 4K scan, it makes me wonder if a UHD version might at some point be released.

I think James is referring to the Universum release. The Eureka is indeed a region B disc and is also based on an older restoration. The Universum is region free and a newer restoration.

Andy and Nicholson are simply anticipating a Criterion Wim Wenders career retrospective box set.

The French Blu of Solaris has far better PQ (but no English subs so you need to rip & sync them)

Scanners for sure!

Check out DVDBeaver's Review/Comparison.

Compared to the other two releases, I see a noticeable reduction of fine detail and a significantly darker picture. It's said to be "supervised by director" but I just can't understand how that is the result...

Surprised at the Last Year at Marienbad recommendations. Studio Canal is in print/available, but certainly not better looking, imo.

I read somewhere that Criterion's The Thin Red Line has some issues - color changes at some point or something like that.

You are aware that last year SC did a newer release based on a 4K restoration? I'm probably not going to upgrade, but at least in screencaps it definitely looks better than the Criterion.

Nothing wrong with it per se.

Arrow put out the Siodmak and Siegel adaptations of The Killers as separate releases. This allowed for each film to have a higher bitrate than when packed together on the Criterion (and visibly better grain structure at least for the Siodmak film). Also, the Arrow release provided Siegel's version in both made-for-TV 4:3 and cropped-for-cinema 1.85:1 ratios.

I’m not a fan of having two films on one disc.

I've said this a few times before, but as my eyesight seems to be devolving, I have a harder time noticing these sorts of things than before -- and I was never particularly good at it before.

I'm extremely happy with my Criterion edition. But it's nice to see such a wonderful but, let's admit it: easily ignorable today, film be getting attention.

Neither is perfect but the Criterion is better IMO. The UK disc has blown-out highlights from contrast boosting and less detail. The Criterion is dark but otherwise looks lovely, and in motion on a TV without comparison caps right next to it the darkness isn't an issue at all. That's one big way caps can be deceptive.

Anyway, a Criterion to avoid IMO is Pan's Labyrinth. The color doesn't match what Del Toro states was designed in the commentary, approved by him or not, and the compression is poor. The UK disc, if you are region-free, is better.

Criterion's The Killers has Tarkovsky's short film adaptation in HD. Which is more important than anything on the Arrow The Killers releases.

Criterion's release of Harakiri is contrast boosted (like many of their B&W films) and cropped compared to Eureka's version of the film in the UK. The latter looks more like film than the more digital looking CC transfer. CC does have better extras though.

Late Spring was released in Japan after CC's release, sourced from a new 4K restoration. It's region free, and has English subs

Siodamak's The Killers has a cleaner print on the Criterion disc. Arrow's booklet and artwork is nice though. I have both releases, it's one of my favorite noir films.
