I don't have an unfaded original print of HII to confirm if this is accurate. And there's a lack daytime scenes to gauge the warmness or otherwise. But I've always remembered the sequel looking similar in style, Cundey's style, but not really the same.. Having had a substantially bigger budget, they were never going to replicate the photography of the first movie. For example, there's a lack of distinctive blue gel scenes.

That's as true of the THX, or the 2007 BD (which have significant differences so it's not really correct to refer to them as if they look the same), as it is of the current transfer when viewed next to the sequel.

Isn't that every thread?

This place has a larger rogues' gallery than Marvel and DC combined.

Why is the background music so much louder than the dialogue? I can barely hear Judith and the boyfriend talking inside the house or her humming while Michael is walking up the stairs. If I increase the volume too much, when the back music strikes my living room explodes.

Sorry to derail the thread but I was just reading AMC's FearFest 2018 Horror Marathon lineup. Following the Halloween Marathon on Sunday, 10/14, the 40th Anniversary of Halloween will be aired.

I don't recall reading anything about a 40th Anniversary documentary being produced. Does anyone have any info on this? If this is a brand new documentary I wish Lionsgate would have included on the Halloween 4K release.

Got my copy and watched it. Really looks great to me. Love the shadow throughout (Loomis talking to the officer in the empty house), the lighting (Laurie in the closet with the swinging bulb) and a lot of stuff like the jack-o-lanterns, porch lights, the lush ivy and sunlit bushes all over the neighborhood, the all natural 70's hair detail, classic car sheen etc. Really made for a fun, rejuvenated watch. Horror is great on UHD, new and old.

Pretty sure they just mean the 40th Anniversary of the movie.

Still trying to figure out why some reviews/users/screenshots have the 4K with less saturated colors, while others have it more saturated. Has anyone done comparisons with DV vs HDR10 on the same display? Could that be what's causing the differences? Something is just off to make the saturation thing so split between people.

So, is Lionsgate seriously giving consideration to this being repressed with ORIGINAL mono or is that just backside talk?

That's certainly an interesting thought, and a test I would be curious to see the results of. Unfortunately, I am only HDR10 capable, so I cannot test this for myself. Hopefully someone who is set up to run this test will do so and report the results here. An interesting scenario would be if two members with calibrated sets, one OLED and the other LCD, would both do this and see what happens.

This release has clearly been very polarizing among Halloween fans, and running tests such as this may shine some light on why there's a seemingly wide variety of impressions regarding the color timing/saturation. I'm not one to dismiss everything as everyone having wildly crazy settings on their displays. If that were the case, then every release would theoretically garner the same type of back and forth.

I do believe that subjective tastes and expectations do play a role in differing evaluations though. Some of this discussion could also be chalked up to the different releases of Halloween having different color timing/saturation, thus creating a situation where viewers may be so accustomed to a specific print, that anything that deviates from that in any significant way simply seems wrong to them. Subjectivity plays a big role in those situations.

In regards to the audio, I feel that weather or not you like the new remix is also down to personal taste, but I do feel the original mono audio mix should have been included on the 4k disc. That really isn't a matter of taste/preference as the newer audio mix is flat out revisionism. That is objectively observable and cannot be argued about in regards to intent or anything of that nature. It does feel like a glaring omission to me.

Having said that, I absolutely love this release regardless, and I fully think it's worth the price for fans of the film.

She's asking a question to Loomis. His response wouldn't make sense otherwise. Close captioning on the DVD, Blu-ray and 4K all confirm "Was it".
That's always bugged me. They should've had her redo the line. It definitely sounds like she's saying "What's the boogeyman?"

I don't know what everyone else is getting back (I've been busy for the last few days, so I missed the last 50 pages or so of the tread...) but I emailed Lionsgate concerning the mono issue. I detailed the issues with it, and asked if there were any plans of fixing it at all. I wasn't nasty or combative about it at all.

This is what they messaged me back with:

Thank you for your email. We appreciate the time you have taken to provide us with your comments; however, we have no known reported issues with this product. Should you purchase this title in the future and experience any issues please feel free to contact us.

Thank you,
That's it. Is anybody getting anything else back? I'm guessing this is going nowhere...

What a strange response. So they’ll do something about the problem if you purchase the disc again and experience the same problem? They’d just send the same message again. Maybe it’s their way of hoping that you’ll keep on buying the disc over and over.

Lionsgate are not going to recognise customers expecting something that they've never promised as an issue with their disc.

You might as well tell them that you have a problem with it not being in black and white or in 1.33:1, or anything else that is not advertised or detailed on their packaging.

The words original do not appear. Therefore lack of originality is not an issue that they are obliged to address.

It's a pity. But that's the size of it.

This.

In their minds, the disc "works as advertised". They aren't going to reissue a new disc to replace ones they do not consider defective.

BTW: I went back and listened to the original mono on the included BD, and LS does indeed say "It WAS the Boogeyman". Odd that I haven't heard it correctly all these years until you pointed it out to me.

You do know that the images in the video comparison are converted SDR, right? Whatever matey's doing to them is blowing the gamut completely out of whack, not just on this but I'm guessing on pretty much every comparison vid he's produced if Solo and Bad Boys were any indication.

I've compared HDR10 and DV on my set with Halloween, there's no discernable difference in colour between the two. But as far as I can tell there aren't many people in this thread who've actually watched the UHD and come away with the impression that it was grossly oversaturated vs the 35th anniversary edition, and many have had the opposite reaction. I think what doesn't help with the "monochromatic" comments is that some people are comparing the UHD to the packed-in 2007 Blu-ray with its golden autumnal timing whereas if they were to compare to the more muted 35th anni Blu-ray (sold separately ) then they'd see that they are very, very close.
