I'm always surprised that he hasn't received more leading roles since starring in GoT. But he has aged quite a bit in these last seven years too.

Doubt they'd do it that quickly. Probably a Season 8 UHD next Christmas and a complete set the Christmas after that? Or something? God knows. It'll come though, they'll be flogging this show for years.

Wrapped up watching ep 8, 9 and 10 and... looked all good to me, no major scaling/aliasing issues from what I can tell, only ep7 is fubared on my end. This is a solid looking upgrade overall over the BD (aforementioned reduced banding and improved compression are very palpable and nice indeed), but damn that ep7 still has the video dork part of me wanting to sell the UHD. Am leaning towards keeping it for now.

[Show spoiler]Bring on april for s8 can't wait.

Season 1 of Game Of Thrones is the worst looking of all, it was shot on Sony's HDCam (videotape!!!) at 1080p digital component 4:4:4 at 10 bit, a now obsolete format.
I think they did a great job on the UHD BD release, even if it's not "real 4K" they got the most out of the 4:4:4 10 bit masters with some improvements with the HDR grading.

It was shot on Alexa and recorded to HDCAM, and while it may well be 'obsolete' I'd like to see you come up with a consumer disc format that can manage 4:4:4 10-bit video at 440Mb/s. Just FYI 'tape' is still used for broadcast and archiving to this very day for this very reason, it's extremely high density and is cheaper and more reliable than HDD or SSDs or whatever.

[edit] I threw in ep 7 last night to get a look at the aliasing vinny mentioned and I've got say I thought the quality looked excellent (aliasing aside), with beautiful colour, texture and detail. If this is what the digital equivalent of shooting on tissue paper looks like then the later seasons must have mind-blowing PQ. Or maybe people should stop writing off 1080p capture without seeing it in 4K first. Predators also says 'hi there'.

Have no other complaints myself aside from the ep7 jaggie-asing, it was mostly a pleasure to rewatch the season again on uhd. But you know me I just like to call it how I see it, no passes given. In spite of the other niceties present in ep7, those jaggies which can shimmer and are accompanied by pink and green colors (not to mention are present throughout the majority of the ep's runtime), for me, are extremely terribad and disappointing to look at. Hopefully inevitable uhd releases of the other seasons can avoid the issue because the improved compression and reduced banding the uhd offers over the bd to my eyes are a worthy upgrade.

It looks like something went wrong with upscaling the horizontal resolution on that particular ep so I'm not sure it's something to be fearful of going forward, unlike when a distributor has, say, chronic compression issues because they can be hard to shake off. This feels more like a one-time error that nobody caught.

I tried busting the UHD down to 1080p as that sometimes helps with poor scaling (I'm reminded of the vertical jaggies on several old Warners HD transfers because they were done at 1440x1080 and poorly upscaled to 1920x1080) but it didn't help at all and it actually caused the pink and green colours on the jaggies that you mention, whereas watching it in 2160p the jaggies look a lot 'cleaner' to my eyes and in some scenes like Charles Dance gutting the deer I couldn't see them at all.

Informative stuff as always, I've been meaning to force sdr over the oppo in ep7 and see how that works out, perhaps later. For now I've always wondered why the richest dude in Westeros would be preparing the deer himself and not some pleb/servant?

I didn't force SDR, I just busted it down to 1080p HDR. As I said, it didn't fix anything and made the jaggies WORSE so I wouldn't waste your time.

They look bad enough for me at 2160p (in both hdr10 and dv), haven't tried forcing 1080p hdr, can only imagine how much worse they ended up looking, ty for poison testing it. Have got time to kill later this evening and will try out a couple more tests to satisfy my own curiosity.

It's symbolism of how House Lannister is making it's play against House Baratheon (stag).

Huh, good stuff, I need to pay attention more and or stop assuming because had no idea their sigil was a stag and always assumed it was a boar.

The very first episode of the show features the wolf (Stark) with the stag antlers (Baratheon) impaled through it, symbolising that these houses are about to collide, too.

Just noticed it was $29.99 at Best Buy and decided to jump on it. Maybe I'll regret it some day if there's a full series box set, but honestly there are entire seasons of this show I don't really care to revisit but I love Season One (and Book One) so I couldn't resist.

Same. I love the individual blu-ray seasons, they look amazing with nice art. Plus I just had season 5 autographed by Jerome Flynn (Bronn) @Dutch Comic Con. The only way I'd buy a complete box is if the box would be 4k. If they will release the other seasons in 4k seperately I'll just buy them seperately, but will skip on the box with all 4k seasons if they end up making one after releasing all of the individual seasons. At some level I'd prefer them to release all seasons in 4k seperately; I'll just grab the 4k discs to put them into my Blu-Ray boxes.

I need the final season on steelbook to complete those. Then whatever 4k set they throw at us. Individual 4k releases would be preferable but, if they come out with some spectacular box set with some cool swag, at a decent price, then i'm sure I would get that. I'm just so ready for the final season to be here. I'll be marathoning the previous seasons when we get close to season 8 premier.
