I love Game of Thrones. I've watched every season and I own season 1 on UHD, and would buy all of them if they are released on UHD. But in no way is it on the same level as The Wire or The Sopranos. Not even close. |

Fair enough. Nearly 99% of TV critics would disagree with you, however. After all, The Wire is considered the greatest show of all-time by many of them. GoT's character development, and especially its writing, have fallen off dramatically in recent seasons, and is certainly not on par with what The Wire treated us to.

GOT is definitely not one of the best shows on TV. It's a B to C grade scripted show depending on the episode. What GOT is known for is its special effects and glaringly over-the-top sex, violence, and language. There are few Hard R fantasies made and so that makes it stand out from the crowd. That's also the draw of HBO, but also its Achilles Heel as it takes more than that to create something stellar.
As for acting and overall scripting, there are far better shows out there past and present. |

Can't say I agree on Game of Thrones falling off. I've actually found it more interesting the last couple seasons than I did in seasons 2-4. Again though, subjective. |

Also, despite David Simon's very clear intent, the show doesn't lean only one way. You won't find better writing and character development than this. This is high level stuff. |

Also I remember thinking The Wire's final season was a disappointment, but to be fair I've only seen it twice and can't remember it well enough to debate that. |

I have no issue with someone stating GoT is blah blah blah and couldn't get past the first episode, but it will stand as one of the greatest achievements in serialized programming, if not the pinnacle, given the radical changes and related audience fragmentation for audiences at present and forecasted for the future. It's OK, as we all confuse personal preference with reality from time to time. It's a thing. |

Is there any need to resort to personal attacks? Preferences are all subjective. If you don't like the show, or don't intend to discuss the UHD, or future season UHDs, then why stay in the thread other than to incite people?

I haven't seen Games of Thrones yet, but I highly doubt it's any better than The X-Files, THE REAL greatest television show ever. Quote:
The X-Files not only rivals any television show on or was on, but it is the greatest show ever produced. Quote:

My ranking:
Twin Peaks The Return The Wire Game of Thrones The Sopranos All great shows and I love them all(GoT is my second fave of all time) but David Lynch’s masterwork is transcendent. Last edited by BluProofie; 12-02-2018 at 06:55 PM. |

The Wire is better than the X-Files. Do yourself a favor and watch it.

As someone is is almost done with season 4 of xfiles and finished season 6 of game of thrones. Game of thrones is way better. While xfiles is good. The monster of the week episodes sometimes drag it down in quality. The show is no better then supernatural. Which they are almost the same show. If the xfiles dropped the monster of the week and wasn't around 20 episodes per season then maybe it could be ranked high. Otherwise its really no different then any other 22 episode show.

Everyone is different. Everyone has a different taste. Every opinion is okay. I never listen to those ''TOP 10 series'' lists (an example), since they're also written by human beings. And what do all human beings have in common? Different opinions. Hell, I'm someone who LOVES GoT, but who thinks (as a guy!) that Gilmore Girls is the best show out there. TO ME. Who cares what shows you prefer to watch? I think we can all agree that this is the GoT thread and we should just keep talking about that, instead of trying to convince eachother which show is the best out there. People will never agree on that and it shouldn't be a problem ![]() |

The best show of all time is entirely subjective of course, but there's no denying that Game of Thrones is one of the biggest media phenomenons of this decade, perhaps even the century rivalled by Harry Potter, The MCU, Twilight and The Walking Dead. I'd even argue Game of Thrones redefined the fantasy genre for film/TV and arguably redefined TV in general. It's raised the bar for television.
Game of Thrones has become one of the most successful and critically acclaimed TV series of all time. Yes there's shows that *may* be better, but there's very few that have reached this level of success. A prequel series is shooting a pilot next year (with four other spin-offs in development). Most of the stars have become household names. The show has made a massive cultural impact, certainly the largest out of any television show this decade. It's become a large successful media franchise all of its own; Game of Thrones merchandise is EVERYWHERE and you don't see that for just any TV show. Game of Thrones is an event. I don't see a reason to put Game of Thrones down. It's a well written, well made, critically acclaimed and hugely successful series. The only real reason to put it down is because it's so popular and you're one of those people who likes to be edgy and put down something popular. I think, by the end of this decade, Game of Thrones will rival the MCU as the biggest media event of the decade. |
