So very excited for this. Back when I was a kid my father and I would usually go see a movie on New Year's Eve and this was 1978's. A huge old theater in NYC, the Loews Orpheum which is sadly gone, having been renovated into a multiplex later. What a great experience to see as a kid. My father has been gone for decades but everytime I watch it it's very easy to slip back into that memory. This will be fun and hopefully look the closest to the original expericence.

Regarding the original laser disc, it really looks and sounds horrible now, I have re-visited it a few times. The original audio 2.0 mix on the theatrical dvd some years back wasn't much better, and so far the best I've heard the original mix sound recently is on the theatrical blu ray, which is superior because it has a higher bit rate. I'd love to hear the mix on this new UHD disc though.
Which LD do you mean? The '91 letterbox disc has rather poor and noisy video but overall it's ok for this film on standard def back then. (All Warner LDs usually are subpar or noisy/less impressive in their PQ for this era. Only the Batfilms seem to escape this.) But the audio is quite good and easily the best non-remix I've ever heard plus it beats the pants off the '78 stereo. I did an A-B test when the blu-ray set was released and it felt like going from proper surround to flat 2.0 and the LD track has actual channel separation in the matrix where the other really just doesn't.

I wish I had been able to catch this back in its original release.... I was born much later. I was 10 months old when Reeve last wore the tights.

However, I do have fond memories of watching this on VHS for the first time. I was amazed... I truly believed a man could fly.

Then of course came Superman II which was my favorite for a while and showcased the first Superpowered showdown between hero and villain in a big budget film.

He absolutely hates George Lucas and Star Wars! Seriously the chap needs help, I wonder if you tube have intervened because his behaviour isn’t that of a well person.

I’m am hoping for big things transfer wise for Superman on 4k. It’s my fav Superman film.

It's hard to imagine the Orpheum once being a great theater. I live about a mile away from it, and perhaps my least favorite theater as it it riddled with issues. I'll still sometimes go there for the convenience, but also know some people who avoid it entirely

I have always been slightly disappointed with the picture quality of Superman so when I saw the extended cut I was very pleased with the picture quality. I was hoping for a 4k release, so I held out. Glad I did. The 4k should be impressive based on the extendeds picture quality. (Fingers crossed-lol)

I'd probably buy a lot of catalog films I'm even remotely interested in if original lossless audio tracks were preserved. Will have a tough time accepting Halloween, for example, without the original mono. I realize most people probably want 4k just for the PQ and/or Atmos to feed content to their new speakers and receiver, but the older tracks should still be included. It's not like a mono or stereo mix is going to starve a uhd disc or even blu ray of previous space. And almost worse is including them but in lossy form as a kind of "eh, here you go" kind of add-on.

I saw The Empire Strikes Back there in 70MM opening week. Other than being deafening it was pretty nice. I remember it was fairly hot that day and getting into the theater's air conditioning after standing a couple hours in line was a relief.

Agree with this so hard. Superman Returns is such an awkward retread that doesn't hold up at all. More than that, Singer tried to marry grounded character drama with the kind of Peter Pan-esque fantasy/epic tone of the originals, and it's WEIRD.

Why did we need a deadbeat dad Superman? Moreover, after having invested so much in Earth and his life there- why would he abandon it for years JUST to see if Krypton was around? It was really that easy to fool him? I don't like anything about that movie except Routh and Spacey.

So the original 70mm audio will only be on the 4k disc, and the 5.1 audio on the blu-ray is Donner's remastered audio? If true, that will suck due to me not having 4k yet.

Considering you're in the 4k forum, you're not going to find too much sympathy here.

So far that's what we know.
If the MA track on the BD is the original I will be pissed tho.

Then rip it and mux it to the 4k

People worry about nuclear and chemical weapons, I'm not. I'm worried someone figuring out how to weaponize Superman Returns.

Returns is Casa Blanca compared to The Quest for Peace. Peace of shit is more like it.

I don't get any of this "deadbeat dad" stuff. He didn't know it was his son until almost the very end of the movie. To be a deadbeat dad you have to know you are one. It's hard to be a dad, to begin with, if you don't even know that the child is yours. As for leaving earth, wouldn't you want to visit your home if you thought for a minute it still existed? There are plenty of people who may be born in one country but then move while they're still newborns to another country. And guess what? When they're older they go back and visit. Not the best analogy, but you get the point. It's not uncommon to what visit the place where we were born. Our first actual home.
