Default Atmos Vs the 5.1

I’m quite lost by the official review on here saying the Atmos is more faithful but the Atmos mix on the 4K disc has the new gunshots from the old 5.1 mix etc while the 5.1 mix has the old original gunshot FX etc so....I’m very confused here. Is the Atmos mix really the 5.1 and the 5.1 really the Atmos?

I need some help with something.

I picked up the Australian UHD of STM and watched it the other night. During the opening titles, as Christopher Reeve's credit faded away, I noticed a glitched frame where the whole image turned orange with clear vertical banding. I've taken screenshots of it here (converted to SDR):
https://imgur.com/a/15cgETF

The first and third images are the frames immediately before and after the glitch respectively. It's only that one frame that I noticed, but I've double checked it and it's definitely not a player or playback problem.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is it possible I've got a bad copy?

I asked this same question a few days ago, but you did a far superior job of capturing what I saw.

Yes, I also noticed this on my UHD disc and the UHD digital version on Vudu. I only noticed the orange around his name, but it looks like the whole thing is orange from the cap you posted.

Well it's good to know it's not just me! If you don't mind my asking, which release is yours? Aus/US/UK etc.?

Mine is the U.S. release.

Probably just a misunderstanding by the reviewer. Atmos is not faithful to the original theatrical. It definitely has the sound effects from the remix created for the Special Edition.

Use the Dolby Digital 5.1 if you want the original theatrical soundtrack.

I found the music cues in the Atmos mix are much lower in volume than that of the original.

The Atmos has nothing to do with the original mixes, it's been built atop the Special Edition 5.1 remix with the completely replaced sound effects and whatnot.

The DD 5.1 has been derived from the original 70mm 6-track audio and is a wonderfully faithful rendition of the original 'wide proscenium' (© RAH) mix. Maybe not the highest of fi compared to the Atmos, but all the directional dialogue is awesome.

Hmm so it sounds like it's a release-wide fault then. Wonder if WB are aware of it.

In 1978 that scene was supposed to be funny. It wasn't meant to be "darker". And kids were frequently spanked/hit/etc. in older generations. Doesn't necessarily mean the mom was "abusive" by 2018 standards

Remove the lenses of nostalgia, and the movies aren’t worlds apart, only a few steps apart.

Re-create either verbatim today, and they would sink DC even lower than before, if that’s even possible.

That's always been a trait of the Thau 5.1 remix, as it was done that way to emphasize the new sound effects over the music and why they also included a music-only track, for those who love the music and want to enjoy it. It was that way on the DVD release and it carried over to this new mix.

Regarding the Mom bit, listen to what the kid says. She told her mom that the cat was stuck in the tree and a man came down out of the sky and gave him back to her. Then the mom smacked her and scolded her for telling lies, because the Mom obviously didn't see Superman come down out of the sky. It wasn't written as her being abusive, just non-believing. A short time later in the film, Donner does his cameo in front of the store with the TVs showing the news report of Superman saving the helicopter, saying "That'll be the day", in regards to believing that a man can fly. The whole tag-line of the film was "You'll believe a man can fly!".

Making a movie in 2018 with 1970's effects wouldn't work? Stunning insight!

When in Rome...most posters here couldn’t address an entire point made, if it killed them. But the benefits of putting on airs or feigning confusion far outweigh being thorough, it seems.

Is that how a warped brain like yours gets its kicks? By trolling a thread full of innocent people?

My view is that it is quite appropriate, particularly for children, to observe that bullies and would be tyrants ARE pathetic and cowardly when they are dispossessed of what makes others perceive them as threatening and/or when subject to justice and authentic moral authority.

I don't agree that it necessarily weakens a villain when they show their colours in either of those scenarios.
