I didn't notice any of that when watching the 4K. But then I don't have Geoffy Vision. Though these days I'm just doing whatever I can to avoid seeing the "RAN" on my screen. It really takes me out of the movie. I noticed it a lot when I watching Bad Boys last night for the first time. Really bad.

Yes, it is a burned in image on my screen that I cannot get rid of.
[Show spoiler] [Show spoiler] [Show spoiler] [Show spoiler] I also have "LANDON" burned on my screen as well, but it's hardly noticeable. Check the HDR is Crayons thread for the full story. |

It could and should be better, the OG neg was damaged back in the day so they slugged in a dupe section created from separations and it really does look like crap in 4K with green and purple fringing all over the place. When they did the SE they located an interpositive minted from the negative before the damage occured and substituted it in that scene and it looks so much better. Even the elements used for the ****ing extended TV Blu-ray contain the better quality dupe!

I was watching this disc earlier and I noticed something strange in the opening credits. Right as Christopher Reeve's name should fade out, there is a strange reddish flash over his name and then it disappears. It doesn't just fade out like all the other names in the credits do.
I noticed this on the Vudu UHD version too, but not on the HDX. |

I thought it looked pretty good for what it is. The effects look bad even for a 70's film. Hard to believe this was made the year after Star Wars whose visual effects make these look amateurish.
The non SE parts look good enough for me. I'm not a huge fan of the film so I'm probably going to be more generous to it than others. |

However, the computer controlled flying rig used for Superman was a brand new experiment in non-model, full-size motion control photography. This was state-of-the-art at the time. They didn't even have that tech for Star Wars a year earlier. It was called the Zoptic front-projection system. Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 12-05-2018 at 04:14 AM. |

I'm amazed at how well the effects still hold up.
The only things that look wonky to me are more of the downrez of optical shots then bad effects. Stuff like Supes flying directly to the screen. Also, him "treading water" in the sky looks very unsupes like. I still remember, as a kid in the theater, being amazed at the "ring jail" effect in the beginning which also holds up to this day. ------ Watching my new 4k UHD, I always find something new that irks me. The all time classic was the decision of the production to go out of their way to put sounds and dialog in that shows the girl with her cat get smacked by her mother. No one raised their hand and asked, what was the point of that? This time was how out of character the Zod baddies were after they were imprisoned. They were all screaming like babies that they were sorry. Much different than Michael Shannon's Zod. Last edited by Zimmy; 12-05-2018 at 01:31 PM. |

The point of the darker, off-camera scene right after Superman saves the girl's cat is that bad things happen behind closed doors and even he can't fix every problem. The mom was probably abusive. The Phantom Zone was a fate worse than death and so it is no wonder the evil villains had a change of heart whilst trapped in the void. At that time, they thought it would be for all eternity. |
