I picked up the Second Sight limited package, but I would immediately double dip if Vinegar Syndrome put out Dawn.

i wasn't aware of the rubenstein situation, so i read a bit about criterion's issue with him

“Yeah, Rubinstein gave us his list,” indicated Becker, who was sipping on some warm cocoa with a generous amount of marshmallows while listening to some pleasant holiday jingles. “He wants two extra-large bags full of cash and wants them in denominations of one-hundred dollar bills. Jesus… he even wants it in those big red Santa Claus bags too. While he doesn’t even own the rights to Day of the Dead, he wants the entirety of profits made on that eventual release by us as well. In addition, he’s demanding 75 percent of our profits on all current and future releases.”

hahahaha wow

This is what happens when you have the combination of outrageous demands and you have the gall to walk away from a deal that agrees to your outrageous demands.

Hopefully when he shuffles off this mortal coil the films end up with someone who isn't a piece of excrement, unfortunately it'll be too late for proper US releases of two of Romero's greatest films.

Only chance is that he gets off his high horse. I'm truly interested in knowing the Second Sight story. How in the world did that deal work out? What did Second Sight say to Rubenstein to get him to agree. They are not as big as Shout Factory, but were able to make it work.

We can only hope that VS or Criterion can work something out because no other labels will deal with him.

Also, Rubenstein's New Amesterdam website has been disconnected, but it's not like it had any new updates in years.

If Criterion does release it, it probably wouldn't be 4K unless that changes. I'm trying my best to find out if Criterion does in fact have it, but it's a bit more of a challenge. Either way, it sounds like Rubenstein really has burnt a few bridges.

I'm pretty sure I'll be getting the Second Sight and a region free player soon.
Why worry about a region free player if you're getting the SS?

IIRC even on the UHD set, the special features disc is a region-locked Blu-ray.

Maybe he wants the SS blu-ray. Not everyone is jumping on the UHD bandwagon.

Yeah, just double checked. The 4K set has the movies in UHD, but the special features are on a region B Blu.

I have the US release but I’m gonna get the standard Second Sight release & that will be it for me. It’s taken too long for a US label to get it & just don’t feel like waiting anymore. Rubinstein’s demands but simply be too outrageous.

For someone who’s a fan of horror films & Kung Fu films like me a region free player has been such a worthwhile investment. I use my region free player more then I do my 4K player. If my 4K player ever broke down it’d probably be a while before I replaced it but if my region free did I’d order another the very next minute lol.

I bought a region free DVD player fairly early on, but didn't pick up a region free Blu-ray player until probably around 2012-2013. I've been super happy with my purchase, and over the years have bought a few more for family members and close friends. I haven't picked up a UHD player yet (still rocking a plasma HDTV I refuse to let go of), but when I do it will play region free Blu-rays and DVDs as well.

Perhaps its merely as simple as that the UK rights are a lot cheaper to purchase than for North America. I know it seems to affect music releases. Look at how many special edition blu ray/uhd releases in the UK have accompanying cd soundtracks that almost never translate over here for our release.

I mean that makes sense. It's a smaller market for sure, so I'm assuming he didn't charge as much.

Still, rumors were that a US label actually met his demands and then he walked away from the deal at the last minute. I don't remember what happened there, but I do remember the story being pretty prominent around these parts years ago. So it might be more than just money as well.

I'm guessing a scorned family member?

I've been hoping that with the release of the new Dune film that he would ease up on money. But now that HBO Max and COVID is messing that up, I see him wanting even more money.

I always meant to send an email or two asking about rights and what is going on with it. Huh.
But that was years ago...

With the odd reaction Geek Gab gave me, and as well as my Spider-Sense going off, I'm pretty sure it's going to happen and if I was a betting man I would say expect it on October 2021 from Scream Factory. (Maybe Criterion)

Are you talking about two different movies, or did you get confirmation from someone re: Scream Factory between the first post and the follow-up?

I’m just ready for SS to come out with MARTIN. It’s been a long time coming. If I recall, the on-location special features were shot in 2019.

Yes, I was able to get more information between the two posts with the unfortunate bad news.
