Maybe, it would be interesting to see if the sales of other labels matches Criterion now or not. I do tend to be wrong most of the time, so you're probably right. :P
But I have a hard time thinking i'm the only one constantly disappointed by them.
I do love their Chaplin releases (if only they could finally release the Chaplin Revues!), so it's not all hate between Criterion and me, once in a while i'm very happy with some of their releases, mostly their older Hollywood movies. :P

Anyway, let's move on the Criterion talk, this is about Dawn of the dead and the chances of Criterion even releasing this is still pretty slim anyhow. I'm just happy I pre-ordered the Second Sight regular 4k edition, I just read it will have a rigid slipbox, which makes me way happier than it ever should lol.

It was Romero's preferred cut. And he didn't like the soundtrack being dominated by Goblin. He preferred the mix of library music and Goblin score found on the US cut. It's fine if people like other cuts more, but the US cut is essentially the definitive director's cut.

  • The Theatrical Cut
  • The Cannes Cut
  • The Argento Cut
  • Document of the Dead (pick and choose which version(s) make it)
  • Anchor Bay's archival bonus materials
Criterion has and will continue to use previously made bonus materials from another studio if they're able to be licensed. If the Night release is a basis, Criterion would also go out of their way to create new bonus materials despite the Second Sight's new bonus materials existing. As we saw with Night, none of the TWC produced material from the prior DVD release made its way to the Criterion; but a whole new set of features made it instead.

I still don't think Criterion or any U.S. studio has the rights. If they did, we would've heard something by now.
It's still likely to be inferior to what already exists.

I'm not saying that it's all bad if they have the rights and they release the movie.

Currently there is no region A release that is easy to get. A release by Criterion would fix that...And their release would be welcomed by many.

There are positives for sure, but Criterion will likely be outshined by a smaller label. Further illustrating the point that other labels are better options for this film.

Btw, what editions do you guys have of Dawn? I only own the Ultimate dvd edition (which I love) and will own the regular edition of the 4K second sight release. I'd love to buy a VHS too and maybe Arrow's blu ray, just to have a better collection but the Arrow version is way too expensive! Maybe sellers will bring down the price now that Second Sight will be releasing a regular version. There are also multiple VHS releases but I'm thinking of getting the one with the original poster, it just looks so cool. There's just something so awesome about a vintage VHS. :P
Mind you, i'm sure my wife will kill me if I start buying too many VHS and different editions of the same movie haha.

Yes, Synapse have the rights. Much like Scream not being able to include Felsher's making of Creepshow on their Creepshow Blu, I would assume that any US release of Dawn will not be able to include Document of the Dead (and honestly, since the Synapse release is available, it isn't that big of a deal.)

About missing extras, the reason that One for the Fire is not on Criterion's release is that the people that own it wouldn't license it to them (a topic that is discussed in the thread dedicated to Criterions NotLD release.)

Since I already own it, I'd kind of rather they didn't include it, unless it somehow has no effect on the price.

I got lucky, I found "Just Desserts" at a used store for like $10 or so. I wanted it, but didn't want to pay the full premium price for what is essentially a high-quality bonus feature.

I would love a US release that has all the bells and whistles, but at the end of the day I just want something that looks good. Whoever releases should hopefully be able to use the Second Sight restoration.

I have the old Anchor Bay Ultimate Edition dvd set. Probably won't get much use out of it now, but don't feel like parting with it. Sentimental, I guess.

Also got the weird XT Video blu-ray set, a German import. I'll be holding on to that because it has an alternate "Complete cut." This incorporates basically all of the footage from every available version. It's a strange beast. The editing isn't exactly seamless and the soundtrack doesn't line up, but it's still pretty fascinating and a great watch.

Lastly, the new edition from Second Sight, which looks fantastic. I don't see why anyone should hesitate picking this up. I guess it's a question of compatibility, whatever, I have no interest in that conversation. If you're a big fan of this film I recommend you buy it.

Oh I'd love to but the only copies left of the limited edition are on Second Sight's website and they don't ship to Canada. Plus, even if I were to find someone nice here to buy it for me and then ship it, it would at the very least cost me a 150$ Canadian, which is way too much for a single title. That booklet looks wonderful, I'd love to have it. But the regular 4k edition also looks really nice, takes less place and while it doesn't have the booklet (sigh), it only cost me 60$ Canadian, so at least my wife won't kill me lol.
But yeah, believe me, I'd love to own the limited release. I'll always regret not getting it. :P

Btw, both versions of the second sight have the same poster, except the limited release's title is written in green while the regular version is in red. I was looking at some of the old posters and they have both versions on google. Anyone know which color was the original poster when the movie was originally release, red or green? Which one is more acurate?

The version I own is the only version I've ever owned - Umbrella's Blu-ray from 2010 (theatrical cut only). I've heard it uses the same transfer as the Arrow release but I can't swear to it. It looks good, albeit with some print damage. Audio is decent. Good selection of supplements (2 commentaries, The Dead Will Walk documentary, 50 minute interview with Romero, trailers, photo gallery, etc.).

I bought it off eBay about 4 years ago. It was factory sealed and cost me $20 (plus taxes). Watching it is similar to watching a Midnight screening of a film print in good but not great shape. I quite like it.

Oh wow, I had no idea Umbrella released a version. Is it region free?

Btw, how would you guys rank the Dead series?

I've always rank them this way:
1- Night remake (the first one I saw, around the same time I first played Resident evil One on playstation one, it left quite an impression on me!)
2- Dawn of the dead (original and funny enough, the second one I saw haha. It made me a fan of the series forever).
3- Day of the dead (every time I watch it this one keeps getting better, it's up to a point it's nearly on par with Dawn to me).
4- Night original (I always have a harder time with the first half hour, you can really tell it was made very cheaply. But after the other characters come out of the basement, the movie really picks up and never lets go, a true classic!).
5- The Dawn remake (I remember not caring much about it when it first came out, comparing it too much with the original one. But it's one of my wife's favorite movie and I've rewatched it so often with her since that I've come to enjoy the movie on it's own).
6- The rest. :P

I have region-free players, but the Umbrella release is not region locked. It's extremely rare and I probably should have kept it sealed...nah. Forget that. Movies are meant to be watched.

I've come to appreciate the original Dawn more over the years, but feel Snyder's remake is a better movie. It's definitely scarier; Romero's take was essentially a satirical comic book. There's nothing wrong with that, but I won't ever be able to forgive the Zombie Pie Fight. Oof.

I respect the original NOTLD more than I actually like it. The remake is far from great, but the performances of Patricia Tallman and Tony Todd are damn good.

1985's Day of the Dead has great effects but terrible acting. The poor script doesn't help. And there's SO MUCH YELLING.

I realize almost everything I've said is considered to be blasphemy. I'm not trying to upset anyone or cause a commotion, I promise.

Haha, don't worry about it, there's nothing wrong with not being as obsessed with these movies as some of us. :P
And yeah, Tony Todd and Patricia Tallman are two of the better actors in the entire series, imo.

1. Dawn '78
2. Dawn '04
3. Night '98
4. Night '68
5. Day of the Dead
6. The rest I suppose with Survival being dead last for sure.

I just did a little internet digging and a couple pages (one being an ebay auction, so take a grain of salt with me) say the green was the first and was very limited. It was for a small initial release, mostly drive-ins. The red one came shortly after as a "mass release" version since it did so well in the drive-ins. Up to 4 or 5 sites saying that now, it makes sense, I believe it. Some call the green an "advance" poster. So the red is the common/standard, the green is the big $ for originals. I see original green ones for sale around 2 grand, reds are around $500. It all points to green as the first, but up to you if it's the original or more accurate.
