Prices for the old Anchor Bay BD seem to have gone down a tad on eBay to between $50 and $60. Not that that's necessarily reasonable either for scalpers, but it was regularly over $150 for a while.

Huh, just looked at the release dates on IMDB and it looks like The Night Flier was on tv 3 months before it had a theatrical run.

The availability of the Second Sight is probably the reason. The vague suggestion that an American release might happen this year also helped.

I imagine most copies of the old disc are in hands of collectors who might want to sell those to somewhat re-coupe what they spent on the UK 4K. Getting fair market value for something you were lucky enough to buy when it was cheap isn't scalping. Scalping is buying dozens of copies hoping to make a ton of extra $. That said, I still have my AB BD and UE DVD box. It's tempting to put the old BD up for sale though. Are they selling for $50, or are sellers just asking for that?

Just went and looked, they are selling for $30-50 for legit copies. Some scammer keeps selling "manufactured on demand" copies for $14.50. Shocked to see how much the LE 4K sets are selling for there already.

What if the US release is the US cut only?

I've seen the extended cut... I like the extra stuff, but not at the expense of Goblin's score.

Goblin's score is too important.

If it doesn't include the multiple cuts then I will simply get the UK version. I actually prefer the extended cut unlike most. I would be disappointed if it didn't include the various cuts especially after the Second Sight gave us all of them. If there is a US release coming, I really hope we don't have to wait that long to get some details.

The US cut definitely has some harsh cuts that the extended cut help. Even before I ever knew of the extended cut I knew stuff was missing.

But, the music... The library music worked well in Night, but not as well this time.

Not that I ever would mind you, but if I sold my copy for 50 to 60 bucks my wife would divorce me.

The limited editions of The Hills Have Eye is about a 60 page booklet with around an 8 page essay. At least in that case they hadn't started pricing them at $49.99.

The limited edition of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage's essay was a reprint of the disc producer's blog entry. A total ripoff for a $50 set.

I like reading about movies, but, very often, find Arrow's commissioned work not very engaging/enlightening. (And, for god's sake, would it kill them to get someone other than Tom Mes or Jasper Sharpe to write about Japanese films.)

I have that Hills Have Eyes and I've never cracked open the book. Didn't know it was skimpy. haven't check Last House on the Left so I hope that isn't the same.

But I will say that Arrow did a superb job with the Between Night and Dawn release, with some great essays on lesser known Romero films.
Which makes me wish, for consistency (and my OCD) for Martin to be on Arrow. Dawn on Criterion would just be hilarious in a way.

I grew up with the US Cut. Pretty sure that was Romero's preferred cut.
I dig the stock music in it.

But yeah, it would be kind of crazy for a US company to only release the US cut when so many other editions typically provide the three cuts.

I recall the essay in The Hills Have Eyes being good, just that the book was mostly screen caps. Oh wait, there was a second piece on the sequels and remakes in the Hills booklet, but it was of so little value that I just now remembered it. But, yeah, too much filler, which I think is a common issue I have with Arrow's booklets.

I can't recall much about the Last House booklet, just that it was probably 50% pictures too. And, for the record, I don't mind pictures or even a picture heavy booklet, if the pictures are posters, behind the scenes, production art, etc, but Arrow's booklets are rarely filled with these.

The Romero booklet was good, as are the two American Horror Project booklets

There have been some really good booklets from Arrow. I can't remember if it was the Django boxlet or the Sartana boxlet, but it was a true history lesson on the entire history of spaghetti westerns.

A lot of the Fukasaku booklets have been great, like the Graveyard of Honor one as well as the New Battles. Some could use some work, but overall I think most have had great essays that are both informative and entertaining to read.

You also mentioned in a previous post that Arrow could get someone else besides Tom Mes and Jasper Sharp to talk about Japanese films. Who else would you suggest? Both have provided a TON of interesting info and Tom Mes is an encyclopedia on Japanese film. His former site Midnight Eye was a perfect spot to read reviews on Japanese films and his books are also great. I honestly don't think there is a single person more qualified to talk about Japanese cinema than Tom Mes. (Donald Ritchie maybe, but he's dead)

Stephen Prince, the film professor (that I took a couple of classes from in college), does a lot with Criterion, and I imagine he could contribute.

I dont know, I'm not familiar with very many current people who cover Japanese films. I actually like Tom Mes' work, I just think going back to 1 or 2 people leads to a critical stagnation, especially when they are both the only ones you get on the booklet essays and the only interviews shot for the disc.

I get what you're saying, but it would hard to justify going from Tom Mes who is probably the greatest base of knowledge to someone else. Still, I guess it couldn't hurt to get others here and there. They also use Tony Rayns for features here and there, as well as Patrick Macias.

Yeah, he was also a great writer and did a lot in relation to Japanese cinema. He wrote mainly on classic cinema, but would have loved to see him write more about Japanese directors like Fukasaku.

Mark Schilling is another great writer on Japanese cinema.

I really liked his classes. I took one on directors where he highlighted Chaplin and Hitchcock. He rotated the two with Kurosawa over the semesters.

Highly knowledgeable, if a bit awkward. I remember one day after a test, I handed it in to him at the front of the room after about 20 minutes and just stood there talking with him for the next 40. Probably shouldn't have done that in a test taking environment.

Some light reading before bed then
I keep meaning to grab almost every Criterion/Arrow booklet and go through all the essays and interviews in them.
