Same here, I couldn't get on with it because the army characters were so loud and obnoxious, and then a year or two ago I realised that that was the whole point. Now I love it to bits. Amazing film.

I loved it on first watch! The army guys are supposed to be loud and obnoxious - thats what makes them funny! Well, funny if you have a certain sense of humour anyway.

[Show spoiler]irst saw this at 14-15 years old and found myself getting angry during the scenes where they're all yelling over each other and was tempted to turn it off. A few years later I found myself just enjoying it more thanks to seeing (and loving) "Dawn". I had gotten more into zombies and had seen some more zombie movies by this point and re-watching "Day" I noticed it's a lot better than I thought, by comparison. Now, as a 31 year old man who's intent to live his life like it's still the 80's, this is one of my favorite zombie movies ever.
That was essentially my experience as well. I saw Dawn and Day a bit earlier than Tyler (roughly eight or nine, I'd say) but the first was a grand old zombie adventure that managed to up the ante by building in some unexpected emotional/character-based depth. Suffice it to say, I watched the shit out of it.

Conversely, Day was a bit of a bummer. The over-the-top theatrics of the soldiers and the underground ruminations of the would-be heroes stood in sharp contrast to the lighthearted carnage and finely sketched characters who made up the "mall family". Great gore though, but to my little boy mind, the film seemed to take a loooooong time to get to it.

Over the course of the ensuing twenty-five years, I find I've played out Dawn a bit. It's still brilliant, to be sure, but it lacks the wonderful claustrophobia of Day's post-post-post-apocalyptic concept of survival. And the pilot's (John?) monologue about the futility of the scientists' endeavour, determining the whys and the hows, is probably some of the best writing Romero has ever done.

I remember one poster on IMDb saying that he puts on this movie whenever he feels depressed and it cheers him right up. I can't quite explain this, but I feel largely the same way. You really do feel like you're in the cave with these folks, and the dour locations, combined with the austere set decoration and the utter lack of daylight from about minute five to minute ninety -- it's totally immersive. But at the end of it, you're glad to be alive.

I grew up not having any love for Day (other than the top notch fx). As time passed, it has become hands-down my favorite Romero zombie film. I especially grew to love Joe Pilato's almost operatic performance.

It seems like time has been very kind to Day. As for the people complaining about the swearing, how the f@ck would you be talking in that situation?

Pilato is one of the main things that put me off, his performance is so big and so OTT (even compared to the other army guys) that I thought it was one of the worst pieces of acting I've ever seen. But now: it's genius. Rhodes isn't so much a man on the edge as a man who's gone so far beyond the edge he's barely human any more, something which makes Bub's latent humanity all the more affecting.

The swearing and gutter talk in Rob Zombie's Halloween films was ridiculous. I don't mind swearing in films anyways but it really stood out to me as vulgar in his films (and I actually did enjoy them more than most seemed to).

Oh, boy, that's opening a can of worms. You really should check out the Scream Factory Day of the Dead thread.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...cream+factory+

There are so many variables to consider, and they're discussed in detail there. You should also check out the caps-a-holic page to see the differences for yourself.

I prefer the original color timing, and I think the Anchor Bay image is incorrectly proportioned, so I like the French disc. But it has the censored audio. None of the releases are perfect. Good luck!

IMHO the AB release has the best compression and the best color timing, but it does have the censored profanity (uncensored is included in lossy) and is ever so slightly stretched. Scream's release has the extras, no stretching, and the original audio in lossless.

I did extensive research and chose the Scream disc. I think it looks great in motion, and the warmer color palette looks good with the film.

It seems the Scream release is the best one at the moment, not 100% sure though.

I'll admit to having watched the AB without noticing the stretch in the past, but now I can't unsee it. Scream Factory, as noted by StingingVelvet, has the warmer palette. I haven't watched the whole thing, but on checking out a few of the scenes, the skin tones seemed too red for my taste. Would it bother me over the course of watching it? Don't know yet!

I'm someone who leans toward preferring a cooler look overall and it didn't bother me. It's definitely going to depend on the person though, you never know. I don't think Dawn or Day have a definitive release, you just pick your poison.

Agreed! I try not to be too pushy on this one.

IMHO the cooler color of the AB disc seems to be more accurate. I thought the colors were over-saturated on the Scream disc.
