Even with this being my second favorite movie of all time, if someone tried to charge me $100 for a Blu, I'd tell them to shove it up their ass sideways.

$100 would be pretty dang high, but the $50-70 range would sell a lot of copies. As disc media gets more niche we're probably heading more toward laserdisc pricing, which people supported enough 20 years of inflation ago to make it a sustainable format.

Lol. I paid $115 for the Japanese Happinet blu-ray box set when it came out a couple of years ago (it's about $95 now). That has all three cuts on blu-ray which were supposedly remastered. They feature no real extras except for great packaging. The transfers themselves have their pros and cons. I still recommend the AB Ultimate Edition DVD set for decent transfers and exceptional extras. I'm going to assume the 3D conversion was a failure. Who knows what's going to happen with this film now.

I wish someone would release the Fan edit Mall Hours version on BD then collectors would be able to have all 4 versions on BD.

Ok I received the 1st French Blu-ray release (2009) yesterday and was able to compare both European Cut of the film. They're both from the same transfer for sure but the French Blu-ray has an extra pass of dust & scratch repair on top which really mess the image as you can see below. Well, you'll have to download them and compared them with your favorite compare toolset to see that some serious frame average filtering was used on the French Blu-ray as the Japanese Blu-ray appears unprocessed. The gamma is also slightly different, slightly darker on the Japanese release.

When comparing them, look at the zombie's right shoulder, it's moving. This is the result of temporal frame averaging in order to remove dust & scratches.

European Cut French Blu-ray release

European Cut Japanese Blu-ray release

If you have Nero Video or Sony Vegas, you could do this. I've upscaled a few fanedits to BD with custom menus and all.

So, next week, I think that I'm finally going to crack and order the 3BD Japanese box-set. I'm just terrified that once I get it, new scans will be announced for release on BD this year.

Well, if that happens, it'll only be because you got the Japanese set. So go ahead and take one for the team!

Over 100 euros/dollars (with P&P) is a expensive hit for the team

I "only" have the Anchor Bay Ultimate dvd box, which is fantastic, maybe that's why I feel the need for a HD upgrade and I don't like the look of the other versions (I know the Japanese release ain't that hot either).

Honestly, if you have the AB 4 disc, stick with it for now. I've got the AB 4 disc, AB BD, Arrow BD and the 3 disc Japan release. The 4 disc is the most complete, next is Arrow, even if two of the discs are DVD. I'll leave the picture quality debate alone, I'm sure you've done some homework.

The Japan set is only good if you want the BD copies since special features are slim. Or if you are a collector.

I know this is going to sound like I came down in the last shower, but why did this go OOP so quickly? Or it seems it went out so quickly, but then again it WAS released in 2008.

I want HD upgrades of the film. I'll keep my DVD set even if I buy the Japanese box.

I am in a minority of one around here on this but I absolutely endorse the Happinet theatrical cut Blu-ray as being totally worth $40. One of my top 2 favorite movies, in my preferred cut, with consistent grain structure with no ghosting or smearing.
