If Rubinstein were smart he wouldn't show his face in public. He's the film community's Public Enemy #1.

Seems like a rare chance to give him shit in public for delaying Blu-ray releases of this film (and "Martin").
And The Night Flier.

Horror film fans have little sympathy for a guy who holds a beloved movie hostage for money.

I think he's the in-the-know blu-ray horror nut community's enemy #1, which isn't that many people. I don't think the vast majority of horror fans have a clue he's doing anything wrong.

If the vast majority of horror fans posted on this forum the admin would have to add a server. Isn't the glaring absence of this film 9 years after Blu-ray was introduced enough of a problem?

No, I know who he is. And Susan Hart. And Wade Williams. I'd love to have blus of the movies they hold the rights to. I just don't let myself start disproportionately hating on anybody whose shoes I'm not in. I'm also fine with the AB disc till something gets worked out.

Off the top of my head, I'm willing to bet that George Lucas has a place in line that's well ahead of Rubinstein.

In terms of name recognition, yeah. I feel like people are softening on him recently. They probably will even more as Star Wars fatigue sets in, especially as soon as a bad entry gets released.

(Then it will all come back when the 4K versions come out if they're still "special" )

Haha, Susan Hart. Enemy of the MST3K fans. I think her emphatic NEVER made us all write her off years ago, while with Rubinstein it gets renewed constantly since we all know he's just looking to make the most money possible, and that amount is steadily decreasing as the years go by. Susan Hart at least has principles I don't know anything about WW besides what movies he has.

WW actually seems reasonable when I read what he has to say and he claims to be working on getting Invaders From Mars and his Ed Wood titles out. I honestly dont blame these guys for looking to maximise their profits on titles that are becoming more niche everyday. I know what a classic Dawn is in the circles I run in and in academic studies but to a lot of folks it's now cheesy and quaint. The guy has to negotiate that landscape and make it worthwhile to put it out.

The shockwaves and Pure Cinema podcasts have detailed interviews with the folks from Scream Factory, Twilight Time, Code Red and others and these guys have to move mountains to get anything released. I imagine rights holders see their position as just as difficult.

Angry Respect Of The Dead

So, a casual work buddy that knows I'm a Blu Ray collector asked me yesterday "What's the deal with the original Dawn Of The Dead Blu Ray? Why is it over a hundred dollars?". Huh? I got mine a year ago used for under 10 bucks!

So, I researched it, here and elsewhere, and now know the rights are up for grabs and Anchor's disc is OOP and Phantasm's Well Go might clean it up for a more modern looking BluRay/4K.

Okay here's my question: is there any official light on this or could DOTD in America be MIA like how Night still is? I know about a European release, but I don't want that. Curious to see if this title, especially after George's passing, is going to get respect in USA?

Well, I mean, if you read the thread you know Rubenstein's holding out for more money. Seems to be steep enough to scare most folks away but who knows if they'll be more swayed by the fact that Romero passed and so interest is at a high.

One of three things will happen:

1 - He lowers his price and someone licenses it.
2 - Someone takes a big gamble and pays up, then charges laserdisc prices.
3 - Nothing.

Rewatched the Anchor Bay DVD of the Extended cut put out on the 4-disc set, and years later I think it still looks pretty solid.

Yep. Incidentally I compared their DVD of the Argento Cut to the recent 4K Italian release and there wasn't a great deal in it. A lot more compression artefacts on the DVD, natch, but not a massive gulf in sheer resolution.

Is the Anchor Bay really going for that much? I got it on ebay a couple years ago after it was OOP and only paid twenty bucks.

I walked into a Second Spin that no longer exists here in California back in 2014 and found it for 7.99. I had the fancy 4 disc dvd set but unloaded that after getting the blu. The transfer and the film itself definitely shows it's age, but if I had to live with only that disc, I'd be fine. I love the movie and it looks good if not great.
