of course, all a matter of opinion, but I'm mildly surprised that you wouldn't prefer Rapture. The score was done by Georges Delerue who also did the beautiful score for Jules and Jim.
For me Rapture was great for the first 2/3 of the film, then i started to feel it was too long, i still liked it enough, and i don't even think it is very comparable to Cybele, outside of the Patrizia Gozzi character. (now that i checked it isn't even that long )

Just have to say i disagree of course, but you can probably expect more responses from other people here in the near future

Finally ordered Charade today with my weekly "allowance." Have so many Criterions to catch up on since I was out of the movie collecting game for a few years. Went with my man Archie Leech this week. Eager to see the movie restored for the first time. Last time I saw it was on one of those cheap DVDs.

So, I'd like to say to all of you in this thread...

You're welcome.
Please buy older copies of Le Samourai and/or the Warhol Dracula/Frankenstein films.

I bought the DVD of In a Lonely Place last year, and I also bought the region free Blu-rays of Gilda, Le Samourai, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

Don't worry, boys and girls. I'm on this.

the last third of Rapture
[Show spoiler]can certainly lose the audience or at least throw them for a loop. I fell into the latter category - "thrown for a loop." I think that there is plenty there to offer the idea that the whole "romance," if you will, is a figment of her imagination. she even says something to that effect late in the film when the police show up looking for the Dean Stockwell character. she says something like "I just woke up" or "I don't know where he is.. I was sleeping." and the imagery during the scene where the affair begins is done in a very melodramatic, dream-like manner that seems like a 180 degree flip from what we knew about Stockwell's feelings for her.

for me, that explanation works. there is another line of dialogue early in the film to suggest this as well, although I can not recall it right now.

I don't know if that is far-fetched. I also fully believe that in Paris, Texas,
[Show spoiler]the main character died in the fire and has come back to tell his wife that he has forgiven her, etc.

You've got a real treat coming, then. The Criterion presentation is superb. I started to watch Charade on the USA Channel (or maybe it was The Nostalgia Channel) years and years ago, and the print was so bad I gave up and figured the movie must be a bomb. I finally bought the Criterion blu-ray after several people insisted that I give it another try, and absolutely loved it. You'll have to let us know what you think after you've watched it!

If Criterion does release Chimes at Midnight I hope the audio is better than the DVD and the old prints.

I'm not sure what the hold up is on Gilda & In A Lonely Place but Criterion needs to be on these.

I'm under the impression that Michael Bay is a modest film buff but simply doesn't actually want to make anything in the classical artful film mold, not that he's this ignorant populist filmmaker.

I started watching CHARADE on Netflix/Hulu/somewhere when I bought the BD at Costco, then decided that Audrey + Cary were a great enough pairing that I'd keep the disc. It looked so, so much better on the Criterion disc.

Of course Micheal Bay is a film buff. How else could he put so many classic film archetypes and tropes into his blender and spew the results across the screen?

Right you are. His lists of top movies are nothing like you'd expect.

I agree, the round up scene when everyone stops and Tom Burlinson as Jim Craig keeps going over the edge of the cliff...is a great scene!

I remember getting chills as I watched for the first time on the big screen over 30 years ago.

Can't argue with you that Carrie needs and deserves a better release... but for the De Palma film that simply needs a release, see my avatar...

Excited about the news on Dressed to Kill. I'm a pretty big admirer of De Palma's films, and will happily upgrade!!!

Ooh. I hope Being an Audrey Hepburn has required some patience on blu-ray. I finally bought Sabrina, but still waiting on RH, the restored My Fair Lady disc, Two for the Road, and Wait Until Dark.

I hope so, too. I know I'm not the only time that can hardly understand the dialogue.

Do you have a link to where this is discussed? I checked wellesnet.com but gave up after I couldn't find what I was looking for in 30 seconds

It sounds like a strong release. Can't wait to get it.

This is a great film... certainly one of Truffaut's best.
