Early Blu-rays that may have playback issues (Criterion, Well Go USA, etc.)

And out of curiosity, I bought the Criterion laserdisc from the 1980s and it had no playback problems. It had less picture info on the sides and more on the top and bottom. At least the LD had a United Artists logo of 1980s vintage while the Blu-ray just had whatever MGM logo was in use.

If you were beyond the normal retail exchange period, you could have also tried emailing Criterion directly. They are very good about replacing defective discs.

Haven't heard about the other ones.

I recently picked up an early press of Stir of Echoes. That one is a rotter. The whole disc is bronzed. Does not play at all. I believe some early Fox discs are like that as well. I guess you can say buyer beware on 2006 or 2007 Blu-ray pressings.

Found today: my copy of Operation Endgame from Anchor Bay... completely bronzed and it has a lot of those little cloudly white dots.

I wish I knew this about Triple Dog. Re-watched it tonight and the menu freezes and won’t even show the bottom half. But I was able to click play and the entire movie played problem free.

The Phantom (Billy Zane) from Lionsgate. Bronzed. It plays all the way through, but there were two places with severe freezing/ glitching so it's no doubt getting ready to completely die.

Yeah, it was mentioned somewhere along the line. Paramount reissued it in 2020.

Started skipping in the same places about 20 minutes in. No scratches, no bronzing. Tried cleaning, different player, etc. It worked fine a few years ago. I threw it in the trash and bought the 5 film set. Are the newer Lionsgate discs any better?

This was mentioned in the Zodiac thread, but I didn't see it mentioned here: if you have the first edition of Zodiac, check Disc 2. Myself and several others have noticed the disc will not read. The disc looks fine, and Disc 1 appears to load/play.

This movie has been released several times (the content/transfer is the same); I bought the third edition from Amazon and it will be here tomorrow.

Last I checked, about 4 years ago, mine was brown near the hub and brownish tinged overall. Still played.

I've been negligent in going thru my bronzing Criterions, and others that have been reported here and there. Haven't checked any for about two and a half years, mostly because .

Ride with the Devil is on Criterion's official list, so shouldn't be a problem getting it replaced.

Time to bite the bullet, again…

The last time I checked this disc was fine, but it's now affected. I know Criterion mentioned that not all discs from that replicator were affected so I didn't really give it much though after that, but it seems discs could still be affected. I purchased mine back in 2010 so it took quite a while for it to surface.

Most likely it's just a matter of time for most of them. I know I was surprised that more had not succumbed to not being playable when I went through them years ago… I think it was just 3 or 4 at that point for me.

And now that I just looked at your picture, yikes.

I did pull out the booklets for a good number of the known baddies at the time, perhaps to slow down their decay. Time to see how they have held up since then. And to get around to the others that have been talked about in the meantime…

The booklets have nothing to do with it. That the blu-ray cases are blue instead of some other color has nothing to do with it. It's INTERNAL to the disc.

Of course it's the disc, but some things, such as booklets, exacerbates the discoloration. Just check this thread. (I've read all of it, have you?)
