Sony TV's have had internal processing at 14-bit for quite some time IIRC (and their Blu-ray players have a 14-bit option too, I know the S790 did anyway) it's only recently that they've added the processing horsepower to apply things like Super Bit Mapping and their excellent Smooth Gradation feature to 4K signals.
That said, I'm already very impressed with how my 2014 Sony TV handles the 12-bit 4:2:2 2020 signal coming out of my Panasonic player. |

Dolby Vision being 12-bit but no 12-bit panels existing yet is just another example of how in flux this all is. No matter what you buy today it's outdated next CES.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ar#post9754213 best to follow the Blu-ray.com threads (moments ago I just edited out the eye catching Marilyn Monroe YouTube clip in that old 2014 post, so as not to distract from the major technical point, being.... when ST 2084 (the PQ HDR EOTF) arrived on public scene and who (meaning us at Blu-ray.com) was waiting for it), rather than Johnny-come-lately reporters/bloggers posing as longtime experts on whatever advanced video topic. I also expect the detail specific postings in this thread and the 4K Movies Releases thread describing HFR testing and proof of concept to precede the internet discourse herd if not by months, then over a year. |

It looks like Advanced HDR, SL-HDR1, and Technicolor HDR are the same HDR format. Advanced HDR can either use automated HDR/WCG upconversion on a SDR video signal or use proprietary metadata to add HDR/WCG to a SDR video signal. Personally I am skeptical that a small amount of proprietary metadata can change a SDR video signal into a HDR video signal. It is one thing to reduce the amount of information you have in a video signal (resolution, color space, dynamic range, etc...) but another thing to increase the amount of information.

Advanced HDR format is a group proposal from Philips and Technicolor but it only supports some of the features from the Philips proposal. The original Philips proposal did allow for the encoding of a HDR video signal. Advanced HDR is EOTF agnostic because it always uses a SDR video signal.
