Good, not great, but would definitely recommend if you like Ang Lee, the Civil War, or character-driven war films. I would take The Ice Storm over it everyday of the week, though when it comes to Ang Lee Criterion releases.
Thanks, you talked me out of it. With the Criterion flash sale next month and the B&N sale after that, I think I’ll save my money for titles higher up on my wish list.

First The Blob, then Hopscotch, now Barry Lyndon. Hopefully there's no more $18 titles or else I might be divorced by next week.

Next Sunday (September 30), I'm going to see The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) and Nosferatu (1922) at the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta (the oldest movie theatre in the city).

These two showings are curated by Ms. Marya E. Gates of Filmstruck.

Body and Soul (1925) is playing between those two films, and I might see it as well, but I'm thinking that I might take a walk and grab some dinner between the above two showings instead.

If anybody is in the area and wants to go, then join me!

My Criterion Blu-ray of The Passion of Joan of Arc has been collecting dust in my unwatched stack, but that's oddly serendipitous, because this big screen showing will be my first exposure to the film.

Barry Lyndon for $18.96 on Amazon (and I assume Walmart) is tempting, but:

1. When I first saw the movie, I was convinced I was watching Buddy Lembeck (Willie Aames) from Charles in Charge. Ryan O'Neal's wooden performance certainly wasn't all that different or better.

2. Kubrick is the master, but his detached, cold, clinical, impersonal style kept me at arm's length from the movie.

Yet, despite all of that, it was undeniably compelling to watch.

Decisions, decisions...

Feel free to weigh in on Kubrick's sweeping tale of a man at war (in more ways than one).

My exposure to PoJoA has only been on home videos (Arrow's Blu-Ray, now CC's, I'm not even sure which one is supposed to be better, they're both great). Even on TV, the film was an eye-opening, awe-inspiring experience I've come to value over almost every other film I've seen and own.

I would have decried "blasphemy!" for leaving the movie in your unwatched pile this long, but seeing it on the big screen will be a magnificent form of repentance. Should be phenomenal, hope you enjoy it!

I will admit that the sheer length and pacing makes it a challenge indeed, but I always found the cinematic compositions, music, tone, and mood compelling. I do find the story interesting in its own way--I kinda see it as an anti-romantacist piece of work, focusing so much on realism and moral gray areas. It's not a film I'd rewatch as frequently as Kubrick's other films, but it is on my mind now and then and it's worth giving a spin.

$18.96 is a steal. Buy it. Come on, do it! Buy it noooowwwww!

I'll be curious to hear what score they use for Passion of Joan of Arc.

Didn't know they were matching Walmart. I'm scared to go to Walmart's site and look because I can't buy a hundred things. I just know it's hard to resist a Criterion I have wishlisted when it pops up on the sale page here for <$20.

Just finished Scenes From a Marriage. I watched the first three episodes last night and the last three tonight. What an amazing film/mini series.

It reminded me alot of Jeanne Dielman. Hear me out lol I know everyone just went this is a crazy person lol Not in the story of course but in the fact that it felt like a film about the banality and borderline boring ritualistic everyday events in the life of a married couple YET I couldn’t look away. I was transfixed. Ten minutes into the first episode I needed to know exactly what was going to happen to these two. I wanted to watch all six episodes in one night. The only reason I didn’t was I had to be up early this morning for a family thing. Liv Ullmann is a vision as usual. She is def Top 5 of greatest living actors.

the actual RED RIVER on amazon is NOT the dual format?

what's the difference between the RED RIVER dual format vs the 2 disc bluray? the 2 disc is still digipack? or jewelcase?
overall any difference between the dual and the 2 disc? inferior print on the 2 disc?

usually, I spot some differences in some duals vs the non duals, so... for that reason I ask.

thanks.

It's still a Slipbox and Digipack. The only difference is there are no DVDs.

An odd way of fortune indeed. I watched the blu soon after it was released and was enraptured. Waiting so long to see it might be a cinematic crime, but I couldn't imagine seeing it in any other way than the blu except in a theatre. So now you really do get to see it in feasibly the best possible way for the first time. Should be truly special.

In what way? It won the Palme d'Or, was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, and took in 61 million on a 32 million budget. Not bad for an art film.

Is there any chance more titles will be added to the sale that haven't been yet?

I just feel the film flows better and tells a better story with the additional scenes added in. I actually would have loved to see an even longer cut

Deep Discount has Criterions up to 45% off, most seem to be 42-43%, plus a one-day-only 15% off coupon AUTUMN15.

I've got His Girl Friday, Personal Shopper, Rashomon, Speedy and To Be or Not to Be in my cart. Need to cull one. Help?

I admittedly haven't seen Speedy, but I would probably cut Personal Shopper. I really liked the film personally so I would keep on your wishlist for later on, but of the ones I have seen, they're all-timers.
