Yes, when you don’t want to use a re-shipping service it’s the best option we got sadly. And Short Cuts was down to $19,99 when I ordered other discs, not sure if it was yesterday or Sunday. It’s like the stock market, plenty of titles go constantly up and down in price.

As far as I'm aware of, it is. And the title you want will probably drop eventually. I had to wait until today for La notte to get discounted, while Smooth Talk went up and down a few times presumably as it ran out of and back in stock at other stores. Kind of stressful.

Wal-Mart seems to be price matching as well.

Bergman doesn't seem to be available via Amazon US, and is still an arm and a leg via Amazon AU.

Just got back from B&N. They didn't have Bringing Up Baby yet in my local store, so I'll be back later in the month for that one (ok and probably a few others). For now, my first haul:

Additional purchases (7/5):

Today's haul (7/2) (ordered World of Wong Kar Wai direct from B&N warehouse due to horrifying spider-wrap issues at the store):

Does the Criterion Channel offer institutional subscriptions? I can't imagine that they don't, but I also am not seeing any information about it. (I am already a subscriber and not an institution. I am simply curious!)

On the general Criterion website, it does say "For educational sales, public performance, and nontheatrical rights, please contact __". For streaming, I think a lot of institutions use a few different services that tends to aggregate a bunch more collections due to rights and ease of use and all that. Something like Kanopy would probably be the main gateway, the point being it's against the terms for a professor to just load up a standard Netflix or Hulu from their personal account. You get into public performance rights basically.

In my undergrad, I recall the university streamed video in upon request. In primary school with the VHS and fat TV carts, we just brought movies in.

I picked up Bringing up Baby at barnes and noble this morning about a half hour after they opened and thats it for me until July. I reserved it but wouldnt have needed to since there were three blu rays and a dvd on the shelves. Not a busy place as i was only one in store.

Just got Mirror from Amazon, along with Ivan’s Childhood, almost completed my Tarkovsky collection. But I don’t know if it was mentioned, but Mirror is a digipack. So online buyers, beware! I got lucky, no dings.

Also HBO Max has Kenji Mizoguchi’s The 47 Ronin streaming with the Criterion logo. I know not a guarantee of a release, but I hope a pretty good indicator! Has it played on either Criterion Channel or Filmstruck with the C logo?

I believe it's been in Criterion's library for some time now. I remember seeing it a long time ago when Hulu was Criterion's digital home. I don't know what shape its original film elements are in (if they exist still) but the film definitely needs a restoration, which will probably be a huge undertaking given the length of the film (or two films really since it's a 2-parter).

I thought I remember seeing it on Hulu, but I wasn’t sure and thought some people might be interested!

So, I want to buy one movie between this three: Black Orpheus, Now, Voyager and Night and the City. All are blind-buys. Which one would you choose? Thank you!

I feel so shitty being a film major and looking through the films and not knowing what films to get and having not heard of some of them before. But I guess I'm still young so I can still learn and watch. My initial 3 movies haven't gotten to me yet, but the next ones I intend to order are House, Pan's Labyrinth, Being John Malkovich, Do The Right Thing, and Dazed and Confused.

Finally got the Zatoichi set. I don’t see it dropping below the $134 price I got it for on Amazon anytime soon so decided to just go ahead & get it. Can’t wait to start watching them.

Kogonada has a nice short on House, which reminds me to pick it up soon before I forget another round. Do The Right Thing gets talked about all the time especially relevant this last year and a half. Youtube with its various video essays is a great place to skim over titles, directors or genres you're interested in. Search for the other titles listed and no doubt you'll find something great that'll lead down a rabbit hole.

Sometimes I look at Roger Ebert's Great Movies or read the feature essays on the Criterion movie listing page. Ebert has a way to distill and celebrates movies, we're all fortunate to have the online archives. BFI has "Where to Start" features on revered directors. Spoilers are not a concern for most of these movies and a good movie is good even if you know every last moment.

Your collection is your collection. It can be small and meaningful, there's no minimum needed. Some things are better seen a few years later in life--or earlier but that's usually hindsight talking. Movies, like music and places and food and people, can and do grow on you over time. Enjoy it as they come.

I bought a Criterion at 50% off today at a local B&N.

I wanted more but a few titles were all sold out in the store (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Crash, and Chop Shop).

But I guess less is more, so I bought Ghost Dog finally.
