Because it gives them attention, as we're now 8 pages deep into guessing and feeding that beast. I see no advantage to any of it. You can't buy something that doesn't even exist yet. Wake me when it's over!

I keep thinking Eyes Wide Shut. The Blu-ray is crap and needs a remaster. I don’t know why people are so gung ho on modern movies like Mank and The Irishman, as if they don’t already look amazing on Blu-ray. How about cleaning up atrocious-looking movies like Hard-Boiled and A Clockwork Orange before releasing modern movies that already look amazing?!

Because Irishman & Mank already have a 4K version with HDR sitting on the computer ready to go. The others require money and time and effort. The assumption is they test the waters with a new movie that costs less to produce and then use money from that to fund older movies.

The ultimate first 4K release from any video distributor (I don't care who it is although if it was Criterion I'd be happy) would be the original Star Wars trilogy (pre-Lucas edits) released on a 4k blu-ray box set with 10 hours of new original supplemental content as well as a real working light saber with laser technology never before seen on Planet Earth.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Two words that should never be used in describing something a person doesn't like: over-rated and pretentious. It says more about the person describing it than the product. As Roger Ebert once wrote it's harder to write a negative review because you have too be more specific on why you don't like a film.

Saying that I hope their first 4K release is Citizen Kane. Whether a person likes it or not it has its position for a reason. I love the film but I wouldn't buy it because I can't afford a 4K TV. Some of us be, like, kind of poor. If the BD release has different supplements I may double dip, but the WB Digibook one is really a beautiful package, and I can live with it.

I know it wouldn't be a 4k release but I would love to see a 2nd volume of the jacques demy set with the remainder of his films

I'm just grateful people are going to stop *****ing every single time Criterion announces a title now.

"Overrated" and "pretentious" are totally fine as long as the person can explain why.

I don't expect their first 4K release, if it actually happens, to be one already in the collection and in print. That would make a lot of collectors hesitant to buy anything. I also don't expect their first 4K release to be a black and white movie.

Not by a long mile. Because it would be highly unlikely that they can have UHD releases for all new titles, but that will not stop people from whining every time about why a particular title, which happens to be the greatest ever film in their estimate, and the very reason they got into collecting movies, is not on UHD?

And when it's a movie I want I will finally give them praise. Been waiting 5 years for this ball to get moving...

That's why I added the "every single" qualifier. I'm well aware they're still gonna moan most of the time, but not every single time now. They'll probably whine in every announcement since that's where multiple titles are announced, but not in every forum discussion for each individual release too.

Gotta say I'm a little sympathetic to them when Criterion did things like putting out Parasite, Crash, and The Elephant Man in 1080p after 4Ks had already been released of those titles either elsewhere or in all regions.

The same thing happened years ago with Close-up (and maybe Summer Hours, if I remember correctly). Originally slated for DVD only. A few day's worth of complaining arguably helped those get blu-rays announced.

Good news if true on the 4K UHD rumor. Can't wait to see what the first title is.

Sorry, I know this has nott to do with Citizen Kane, getting ahead of myself.
I truly hope they announce Floating Weeds sooner than later. It's long overdue now and I'll happily take a Blu-ray (from the recent remaster, of course) at this stage.

For those interested in those type of things, the tarot cards included in the Nightmare Alley are limited to only the initial pressing and will not be available with subsequent runs of the disc. So, if you were holding off for whatever reason on buying this particular title, think again.

Same. Much as I love Tarkovsky, he landed on my sh-t list after I watched RUBLEV. No reason whatsoever for any of that animal brutality in the film. I can still watch some of his other films, but that one was one and done and I admit my estimation of him after that diminished.

I kicked DOTD out of my reliable source list long ago. The dude struck me as being more than a little, shall we euphemistically say, out of it?

I see your point, JK, but I have to admit I do get a kick out of reading all the speculation. After awhile it gets old, no doubt, but for me there's a lot of fun to be had playing the guessing game for a bit.

Thanks for the info. Thankfully Criterion doesn't do this too often. The lenticular Time Bandits slipcover was another limited run. I still see it on the DVD in stores but not the Blu-ray.
