I had so many of the Bergman titles already when the set came out that it would have been mostly redundant. Plus, I have an Oscars cabinet where I display both Best Picture winners and Best Foreign Language Film winners. Having individual releases works out better for me in that regard. (And it's why I'll be buying Fellini's LA STRADA next week when that individual release comes out.)

Bought the box set months ago, still haven't opened it. Too stressful, too intimidating. I don't have time to sit and watch his entire filmography right now. I just feel at ease knowing I have it. Plus he's my favorite director

Just saying that the discs aren't set to self-destruct in a given time once you open the pack. You can watch a couple, put the set away and take it out again another time.

Andrei Rublev instead. It's Tarkovsky's masterpiece.

The cover for Mona Lisa may just be my favourite in the collection now. The Arrow release is fantastic, but I'm double-dipping during the B&N event.

I did contact Criterion to see if the art (by Alice Zhang) may get a poster release, but alas no - due to rights issues.

And of course, it's a brilliant film, and performance by Bob Hoskins. Good to see others picking it up.

I wasn't going to partake since I ordered 5 during the Criterion flash sale but the 4K's were too good to resist. Pre-ordered:

Same, except for the 'favourite director' bit.

Plus I'm in quickly-binge-as-many-films-as-possible mode at the moment trying to clean up my Netflix and DVR queues. Which is not the mentality to bring to Bergman, I would imagine.

Stopped in at my Barnes and Noble for a coffee, a good book, and partook in the sale selection. Picked these up today, until next flash sale (if I can help it). I considered throwing in Days of Heaven but it wasn't there, I took it as a sign to wait for it when it gets the 4K treatment.

*blind buy

Barnes & Nobles still have their COVID-19 shipping change intact, so no shipping to Sweden.

Amazon started lowering their prices on a lot of Criterion releases right now. Does anyone have an idea if the upcoming 4K UHD ones and Devi (1960) will have lower prices too? I can't remember how Amazon did last time compared to B&N.

Days of Heaven is no longer with Criterion. Paramount has regained the rights and released the movie on bluray recently, with one of the worst covers in history. My eyeballs have still not recovered.

To be fair maybe Paramount will eventually release it on 4K UHD. Perhaps for the 50th anniversary in....6 years

They should. Give it a little bit. The same thing happened with the Arrow sale titles. It took Amazon a bit to match the preorder titles.

Used my birthday gift to buy these movies.

Hope it was worth it. Was just under $100.

I’ve actually seen all his movies. Rublev is obviously great, but I want a movie that I can watch repeatedly. Mirror and Solaris are the two that come to mind in terms of replay value

The Tarkovsky film I can re-watch most is Ivan's Childhood. Of course, it's a bit of an anomaly in his work, being fast-paced, dramatic, action-packed and character-focused.

For me, the Tarkovskys with the most replay value are Solaris and Stalker, followed by Rublev. Ivan's Childhood is good, primarily for its great visual beauty, but I don't find it as resonant as other Tarkovskys.
