To me it felt like Fellini thought the film was smarter than it was. There's no flow to it whatsoever, just scenes back to back. The lead is not interesting in the slightest. Also, it shares the same problem with Suspiria (1977), where the first scene is the best and nothing later in the film tops it.

I realise this isn't popular in film circles. I'm in the minority in my dislike of the film, so it must be doing something right since the majority like or even love it. It just didn't work for me. I've seen 5 Fellini films
[Show spoiler](8 1/2, La Strada, La Dolce Vita, Julliet of the Spirits, and I Vitelloni)
and I've only liked one (that being La Strada).
To each their own. I watched The Third Man twice and each time I was seriously disappointed. It’s been years since I’ve seen it, though. I’m curious to revisit. Something about it is compelling but it never could click with me.

I love The Third Man. A film I saw at quite a young age due to my mum. Maybe if I saw it now for the first time I wouldn't like it as much.

But yeah, it's the old "different strokes, for different folks" thing.

I could watch Marcello Mastroianni read the phone book for 2 hours and feel pretty good about it.

Criterion, it’s been too long since we had an Edward Yang release! Give me Terrorizers or a set, I wouldn’t mind a set! A Yi Yi 4K would also be nice, but beggars can’t be choosers.

It would be nice to see a set. I know that the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute are going to have a Yang retrospective next year, and it will include a 4K restoration of 'A Confucian Confusion' and I believe a restored version (though the work hasn't started yet) of 'Mahjong'.

Todd Haynes confirmed that Criterion is releasing 'The Velvet Underground', according to this Letterboxd user who was at a screening of 'Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story'.

Now on the main page at Janus' website. I'd say it's all but certain to get a 4K release from Criterion. If its this year, then I would guess November.

I'd imagine The Velvet Underground would be announced the same month as Velvet Goldmine.

I was going to purchase Criterion's The World Person in the World (my favorite movie of 2021 so far), but MUBI just announced a box set release for Joachim Trier's Oslo Trilogy, which is amazing. Going to go with that instead, none of the other 2 movies had been released on bluray in the US or UK. Thought I'd let others know just in case they might be interested in getting the whole trilogy instead (although will most likely be region-locked).

I'll get both.

I also hope we get a 4K of The Double Life of Veronique eventually.

For me, the best film I've seen about filmmaking is definitely Day For Night.

I feel a similar way about Fellini as the OP. I had a false start with 8 1/2, but will try again some day.

8 1/2 aggravated me to no end during its first half (all that loud incessant talking grated on my ears), but I was finally won over by it in the end. The back half is magical. Great movie, but I can see why some might have difficulty with it.

Speaking of 8 1/2, are there other interesting movies or shows that spiral into existential surrealist weirdness in the end? Dream-like character study endings. Can think of All That Jazz, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Berlin Alexanderplatz.
