Well my Lady Vanishes disc refuses to load. Which is awesome. No bronzing or anything but i get the Criterion C in the corner and then it won’t go any further. Tried in my PS5 also and get a can’t play disc message. Is Criterion still exchanging this?

Haven't clicked the Twitter link, but my first thought is of those obscure films/shorts that don't really have any artwork so TMDB and the like just use weirdly stretched screen grabs of the title cards.

Had the same problem with TLV 2011 standalone disc and Criterion replaced it quickly. It wasn't one of those listed from the rep plant that had so much trouble, but it was from the same time period. I think I had to mail the disc back, but I'm not 100% sure. There were a 1 or 2 posters on HTF that reported they had issues and when I checked, the disc was dead (wouldn't even load to the menu)

The disc from the Hitchcock Boxset worked fine. It appears the replacement disc was from the same later pressing as the boxset used judging from the ID codes

I hope Pickpocket gets a reissue (and in a regular bluray case). It's out of print and I still haven't seen it.

This was the New Year's drawing 10 years ago today from the late Jason Polan:

The drawings were always highly anticipated and a lot of fun to guess. From an art perspective, I really enjoy looking at Polan's art. It has a certain quality that makes it interesting to look at and revisit for the nuances.

Re: the drawings - has there ever been an unrealized clue from any of them?

I loved his drawings. They were simply done, but often quite creative. There was one from 2013 where a guy was holding a birdcage, and a little boy next to him that I can't recall what it was for. Same for the boy looking out the window on the left side.

edit: Looking at what was released in 2013, the birdcage was for La Cage aux Folles

If I remember correctly for the boy in the window a few people guessed Boy (1969).

Either way, I do miss the drawings and wish we had something similar now. I'm hoping to see something Samurai related from Criterion in 2023.

I watched "Daddy Longlegs" last night, great film. The part when the father gives his kids sedatives and can't wake them up and then has his doctor friend come by is one of the funniest scenes I've seen in ages. Highly recommend picking up that disc if you haven't yet.

I had the same issue and emailed them.

In response Criterion also state this: The best way to tell if your disc from the list is defective is by looking on the underside of the disc (the shiny side) and if you see the letters 'BVDL' your disc will be fine. If you don't see those letters you should have it replaced.

Strangely my The Lady Vanishes has the BVDL on the disc, but will not load on any of my players. Still need to get it replaced.
