OCN. They’re using the same 4K restoration that Columbia used for the Columbia Classics set.

Go by directors, it would have to be a significant one by one of their go-to directors. Wes Anderson comes instantly to mind, since as far as I know none of his films are on 4K. Kubrick too, but considering BL is already in the collection and a 4K would have the same spine number, a Kubrick 4K would need a big title and have to be new to the collection (at least in the DVD/Blu-ray/4K era). For instance, 2001, ACO, The Shining, FMJ, and EWS have all never had modern releases. In fact, only 2001 has had a laserdisc release. We could also finally bring Tarantino back. His Pulp Fiction laserdisc is still legendary, and any of his movies would be welcome in the collection. And as I said above, Scorsese is big right now, and I think Criterion will eventually redo Goodfellas. Spine 1200 is a great time for that one.

Movies themselves, it would have to be one significant to the collection. Kino already called Body Snatchers 56, or I’d say that one. Other options include their last released laserdisc, Armageddon, and the axed laserdisc 385: Gone With The Wind. Go through their DVDs, and you can find easily hundreds of titles that never made the jump.

Then of course we have anniversaries, which have been the number one excuse to release a movie over the years. Leaving one big one out, I got The Robe, 2001: A Space Odyssey, American Graffiti (the first Lucas film in Criterion history; Universal said it’s coming but didn’t say from who), Grease (if the Paramount deal is indeed back on), Scarface, Return Of The Jedi, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Shakespeare In Love, Saving Private Ryan, and Argo.

When you combine anniversaries with big Criterion titles, one big one comes to mind: King Kong. It’s laserdisc number 2, released day-and-date with Citizen Kane. It had the first commentary ever. And WHV has kindly decided to do absolutely squat with the anniversary on their own (having WAC repress and rerelease the 2010 Blu-ray doesn’t count. A Criterion 4K, with all previous features, would be a real winner.

Another significant film in history could be a last on the format movie: Mission Impossible (Beta), A History Of Violence (VHS), Sleepy Hollow (laserdisc), Bringing Out The Dead (laserdisc, same day as Sleepy Hollow), and The Jewel Of The Nile (CED). While MI seems unlikely and Sleepy Hollow has already been announced by Paramount, the other three are welcome.

And then if we just list movies that have had the short end of the stick on video, we get Greed, El Cid, The Fall Of The Roman Empire, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan’s Daughter, The Devils, Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid, Dog Day Afternoon, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (a Best Picture winner ffs), The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Looking For Mr. Goodbar (okay probably not happening), Star Wars (on second thought, Goodbar’s a possibility), The Warriors, Little Darlings (rumored to be coming this year), a comprehensive release of Blade Runner, Pink Floyd - The Wall, The Terminator, Amadeus, and Dances With Wolves are just some.

Unless number 1200 is a really out-there title, it’s probably somewhere up in that behemoth of a list.

American Graffiti is getting a 4K release from Universal in November, so that's not it.

I would hope it's a new to 4K and not a re-release of a movie that had a good enough 4K release (there are a few that could benefit from a new master)

#1000 and #1100 (Godzilla and The Incredible Shrinking Man) were both fun genre offerings from a company mostly known for releasing art house movies. If it's anything from that WB list, I'm guessing it's Captain Blood.

Kind of figured since Criterion have a relationship with Disney for some titles and those are still in print they might give the okay for a 4K upgrade.
If there is an HD release in the collection that desperately needs an upgrade it's The Ice Storm. It's probably their ugliest disc.

UPDATE: Coming November 14 in 4K!
I thought this maybe coming so I sold my OOP Criterion Blu-ray last month for a good amount

Generally agreed, although I would vote for those that bring a beautiful set of extras back to the collection. 2001 had some lovely stuff, and Close Encounters had the build-your-own-cut feature that would be amazing to see replicated (and Bram Stoker’s Dracula feature that let you edit a couple scenes yourself).

But yes, my guess would be King Kong, and if not that, 2001 (just to get it back in the collection).

Nothing for me from this announcement, would certainly enjoy Days Of Heaven in 4K. But not for $25.

I'll DD on it. So nice to finally see a Robert J. Wilke movie come out in 4K. Although MAG 7 beat this one to it.

Pat Garrett is a classic western of the American New Wave (before the studio butchered it), by one of the great Western directors, starring icons of the music of the period, and yet it languishes on DVD. Just imagine the extras that could be included (stories of Kristofferson and Dylan jamming in the evening, of Kristofferson convincing Peckinpath to work with Dylan after SP felt the studio forced Dylan on him).

And Criterion is rumored to have PG.....

Such a weird coincidence with this announcement-Yesterday, I had a random thought while watching TCM: What was the name of that French film
[Show spoiler]with the two nut jobs that kill Jaqueline Bisset and her family?

Couldn't care less about anything after Drunken master 2 (1994). Oh there's still Miracles I guess and I wouldn't mind another release of Snake in the Eagle's Shadow too. But still, Jackie Chan movies on blu ray in North America are looking pretty damn good these days!
Eureka released the Project A movies, Miracles has an 88 Films release.

Janus update:

Downpour (1972, Bahram Beyzaie)
https://www.janusfilms.com/films/2143

Criterion thoughts:

This is the second month in a row where they are re-releasing a previously OOP film. Last month was Don't Look Now and this month is Days of Heaven. It should be noted that the standard BD is also being re-issued. I wonder if this means Rosemary's Baby will get the same treatment.

I'm curious what December holds, since it's so often a relatively light month. I imagine 2 new titles (1 of them being a previous Olive Films release), 1 4K upgrade of an existing BD, and the second wave of Janus Contemporaries (3).

Paramount is releasing Rosemary's Baby on 4K, so I don't see that one going back into print anytime soon. However, maybe we'll get 4K versions of Nashville and Harold and Maude.

Yes I know. But Eureka's blu ray is Region B and was released in the UK, while 88 films is currently working on a Region A release of the Project A movies for North America.

Depending on if you consider Texasville a special feature or not (it doesn't have it's own spine number), The Last Picture Show seems to be the first 4K upgrade from Criterion to have new special features. Also just an interesting stat, the november announcements makes a total 51 Criterion 4K UHD releases. 26 are upgrades from blu-ray to 4K, 25 are new to Criterion titles.

Wow! What a great way to end a long day of meetings. Mean Streets is the crown jewel of this batch for me, but I’ll be getting all of these sooner or later. Great month! Sale month!
