Lars von Trier’s Europe Trilogy BD set is now listed as OOP on Criterion’s website! This has to be the shortest in print period for a Criterion BD with only a bit more than two years.

Wow really strange. No advanced warning or anything either. I wonder if they're just planning to repackage it into a plastic case or some other slimmer packaging perhaps?

I find this just as puzzling. Don’t they usually state out of stock for titles they still have but repackage? Maybe they sat on the three films for so long and couldn’t renew them again. I remember MUBI having pushed for many of the new von Trier restorations, such as for The Idiots and Dogville. Maybe they were able to convince Zentropa to give them the NA rights as Curzon got them all in the UK.

I also just went back to their wording when they lost the rights to the Paramount titles and they mentioned that they don’t usually communicate upcoming OOP titles.

I get the feeling MUBI was able to secure the rights.

I know a lot of LvT's films (including these) are streaming in 4K on MUBI.

That was one thing I thought of.

Major NSFL warning,
[Show spoiler]the other thing I thought of, and this is much darker and goes right against the "no foul play" bit (in fact I heard that bit at 4:30 AM and I heard about his death at 4:00 AM), would've been murder-suicide, with the murder being a mercy killing for some reason. (We've had several incidents in our area of an older and/or sick spouse being killed by the other spouse in a hospital, nursing home, or in their own home, usually followed by suicide, so sadly this isn't that unrealistic.

I'm actually hoping it was a gas leak, carbon monoxide poisoning, etc, because I'd hate to think of Hackman and his family ending the other way.

@Shane: That came to my mind too. Anyhoo, he was a brilliant performer that left a fabulous portfolio of work across decades, genres and directors. Let's remember him for that.

You're likely right. Back in 2023 it was reported that MUBI had acquired 11 LVT films including the Europa Trilogy. Breaking the Waves has also been listed as Out of Print at Criterion for a while now too, so this has to be why.

Mubi Acquires 11 Lars Von Trier Films In North America, Sets Remastered ‘The Idiots’ For Theatrical Release

Mubi has acquired 11 films by Lars von Trier for North America, including the director’s Dogme 95 entry The Idiots. It will release a new uncut 4K restoration of the film June 16 theatrically timed to its 25th anniversary, followed by an exclusive streaming release.

Other titles, most newly restored, include Dogville (2003), The Five Obstructions (2003), Manderlay (2005), The Boss of it All (2006), Breaking the Waves (1996), the Europa Trilogy (The Element of Crime, Epidemic, Europa), Antichrist (2009) and Dancer in the Dark (2000). Some are streaming on Mubi now, others will roll out on through September 2025.

Mubi acquired new restorations of von Trier series, The Kingdom Seasons 1 and 2, along with its latest season, The Kingdom Exodus in 2022.

TrustNordisk brokered the deal with Mubi.

The Idiots, which premiered at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, was made under the Dogme 95 school started by von Trier and other Danish filmmakers. It centers on a commune, whose members aim to disrupt bourgeois society by spontaneously feigning physical or mental disabilities in public. The darkly comic film was censored when it was released. It’s been remaster by Zentropa Post Production.

Matt Gutman of ABC News/Good Morning America is reporting that it's being investigated as carbon monoxide poisoning.

He was amazing The French Connection, Superman, Hoosiers, Unforgiven, the very underrated The Package...so many masterpieces. Yes he was older, yes he lived a long, great, prosperous life, but it's still tragic.

To that I will add The Conversation, Under Fire, FC-2, Royal Tennenbaums.

As someone who was following wrestling pretty closely in 2007, that was the first place my mind went as well.

Wonder if MUBI will release these on blu/4K themselves.

He was one of those actors that instantly elevated a film for me, really sad news.

Like everyone, I'm saddened by the news of Gene Hackman this morning. Reminds me that I still need to add Downhill Racer to my collection. Along with Tenenbaums and next month's Night Moves, I think that's everything Criterion has.

RIP Gene Hackman (and his wife and dog). So many amazing films he starred in. My favorites were Enemy of the State, Crimson Tide, The Conversation, Mississippi Burning, The Royal Tenenbaums, Unforgiven, and his character of Lex Luthor in all of the Superman movies. He was also particularly sinister in Extreme Measures (1996), The Firm (1993), and Absolute Power (1997).

His wife was only 65. When he was asked in an interview about any concerns he had in life, he mainly wanted to make sure that she was taken care of. So yes, a tragedy.

Besides Popeye Doyle and Bonnie & Clyde, my two favorite Hackman films and his best performances IMO are Night Moves and The Conversation (both of which bombed at the box office). Good to know one of these is coming to the collection, hoping the other will be coming too, it's one of Coppola's best films.

The Conversation just got a decked out release by Lionsgate a few months ago.

Expensive, but better than what Criterion would have given us.
