There is nothing majorly wrong with the 4ks of The Shining, The Maltese Falcon, Goodfellas, Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, or 2001. No reason Criterion should redo them. I'd rather see Criterion release new to 4k titles.
My 4k wishlist: Something Wild (1986) Midnight Cowboy True Stories The Irishman The Lady Eve Last edited by jt839; 04-15-2025 at 12:34 AM. |

I'd throw in another commentary or two, some new interviews/pieces, maybe even an open matte version in 1080p. Perhaps a new Atmos mix. Though, I think it would work better as a Scream Factory 4K. |

Wish list:
Godzilla: The Heisei Era (will settle for a 4K of Godzilla 1984, or a 4K of any live-action Toho Godzilla film) Nightmare Alley 4K (with the B/W cut) Barry Lyndon 4K Boogie Nights 4K Napoleon Dynamite 4K Isle of Dogs 4K (or any Wes Anderson in 4K) Any Chaplin 4K upgrade There are other titles, but I assume Criterion will hold off on High and Low until the remake comes out and any David Lynch 4Ks until November. |

Maybe they'll come out of left field and give us something like Chabrol's Les Biches or a Norma Shearer boxset.

Questionable color timing, no open matte option, no mono track.
Nothing wrong per se, but it would be a good excuse to restore The Maltese Falcon (1931) and Satan Met A Lady (1936), which have limited potential on their own. The HDR is awful. While every 4K has at least one troll complaining that "...blah blah blah, the disc is too dark, blah blah blah...", Goodfellas is one of the few discs where that's true. It's oppressively crushed. This is because while Scorsese and his team oversaw the 16-bit 4K scan, the 4K restoration, the 4K SDR color grade, the 4K SDR master, the 2K downscale from this master, the Blu-ray transfer, and the Blu-ray releases of this transfer, that's where their work stopped. Someone else from WB, who was not connected with Scorsese, oversaw the 4K HDR color grade, the 4K HDR master, the UHD transfer, and the UHD release of the transfer. Granted, it was one of the earliest 4Ks. At the time, it was the oldest film ever to be released on the format, a record that by now has likely been broken at least several hundred times. However, for that mistake to become the final word for such a legendary film...it just can't be. The new 4K and Blu-ray would both cost little to make. The actual scan, restoration, SDR color grade, and master are stunning. So a new DV/HDR color grade, plus new special features, plus new authoring and manufacturing. Port over the Blu-ray transfer from 2015, now they've saved even more effort in producing a Blu-ray transfer. Very little effort, relatively little money (compared to a film they have to scan and restore from the ground up), very high payoff. https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/2021/0...anca-1942.html Scroll down to the video. Some of the worst filtering I've ever heard. No mono audio, every release is missing hours of features (because there's several dozen hours of features), all mono tracks on home video have some form of an issue. The current 4K is great, but just by adding the deleted scenes, unfiltered sound, and all special features, Criterion could make it even better. 'kay. All are solid films, and I'd say The Irishman and Midnight Cowboy will inevitably happen at some point. |

High and Low seems very likely. Criterion, please also bring Stray Dog to UHD/BD. Long overdue!

Read up on it instead of believing clickbait headlines, because it’s utter nonsense. She was told about the scene in every detail but just prior to it being filmed, this was in order for Bertolucci to capture the shock still registering on Schneider’s face. So yes, morally in the gutter and very, very manipulative but still a million miles from your assertion. |
