This could mean nothing, but I just spotted a new BBFC entry for Traffic (2000), from Spirit Entertainment. They distribute Criterion's titles in the UK. This release could be for another studio or label that they distribute for, but with Soderbergh pushing for his movies to come to 4K, and this being the 25th Anniversary of the film, it seems inevitable that this will get a 4K upgrade from Criterion.

Damn, that sucks, but to be expected considering all the music rights issues with that one. Thanks for the response, though.

I would. Then I'd sell it for $100.

It would be nice to finally see BD upgrades of Pitfall and The Face of Another to alongside Woman in the Dunes.

I worked at a movie theater in early 2000s and we had an employee partyat the theater and were trying to choose a movie to watch. This was late during a midnight hour. I brought Equinox thinking this would be the perfect midnight party movie.

I unanimously got out-voted and we watched The Wind Shakes the Barley. Gimme a fughin break! Wind is great, but that aint no midnight party movie!!

This is the 25 year plan that Dignan was really talking about in Bottle Rocket

And I’m so out of touch I never even heard of that WIND flick you mentioned. I think EQUINOX would still make for a great Midnight Show these days, but only the SERIOUSLY COOL need apply. You know who you are and if you have to ask, you ain’t.

Unfortunately, the feature version doesn’t hold a candle to the original UK miniseries.

TCM aired "Profumo di donna" (1974; the original version of "Scent of a Woman") in 2019 with a Janus Films logo, and then nothing has been heard about it since. Has there been any rumblings that some may have missed?

This is a very rare example of a foreign film where the reputation of an American remake towers above it, but that also seems like a key to market it. Many, many people have seen the Al Pacino version without knowing it was a remake. I would like to think that the Vittorio Gassman character's sometimes "politically incorrect" dialogue doesn't have anything to do with the lack of release (though we learn later what makes him the way he is), but it's hard to tell when that issue really comes into play when it comes to releases.

If Criterion were to release it, maybe they can pair it with another Dino Risi/Agostina Belli film, "Telefoni Bianchi" (1976; "White Telephones," though also released under a title I don't think fits, "The Career of a Chambermaid," which is too similar to "Diary of a Chambermaid" and doesn't really fit the film anyway) which is even better than "Profumo di donna" (in my opinion) but was never distributed in America theatrically and likewise has never seen a home video release over here.

As suggested by a closet visitor (I'll let you guess), I did a double feature of All That Jazz and Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling. They work perfectly together. Both felt autobiographical, real, and tender: work, art, comedy, sex, drugs, life: these are things Gideon and Dancer faced, what Fosse and Pryor show us. A lot of humanity in both films; it felt like a goodbye; not a parting with the audience but with themselves. Life unspooled, the perforations trauma.

Yeah, I’ll purchase when Criterion has their semi-centennial 50% off 50% off sale. Though there’s only .00005% chance of that happening.

It is a good thing I wasn't already heading out there.

As we have anniversaries coming up and there are already completed 4K DCPs for both, I am going to predict DOG DAY AFTERNOON (not coming from Warners themselves based on the leak) and MEMENTO as two of the remaining four September releases to be announced.

Edit: Warner considers the anniversary of DOG DAY AFTERNOON to be in December for some reason so I will say sometime between September and December for that one.

Gateway Film Center is showing Deliverance, Five Easy Pieces, Midnight Express, Dog Day Afternoon, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Network and All The President's Men as having new 4K restorations done.

https://gatewayfilmcenter.org/pushing-the-boundaries/

I hope we see some of them from Criterion soon.

NETWORK is very likely with Criterion too but probably not in September. ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST is already confirmed to be coming from Warners directly.

FIVE EASY PIECES will come from Criterion eventually too, but I would not be surprised if it's in the next Columbia Classics set first.
