Anybody hear if Goddard's Weekend is going OOP. Wanted to pick it up for this sale along with the other Criterion Goddards but seems to be Out of Stock everywhere but Criterion's site itself (which is hefty shipping for one discs to Canada) and WOWHD (which is currently not shipping to Canada):

Amazon.com
Amazon.ca
B&N
Unobstructed View

Trying to find a good price on it as it's the last Goddard I want to snag

The Criterion site says ON BACK-ORDER not OUT OF PRINT, so Criterion should be pressing and selling more in the not so distant future.

I wonder if WEEKEND could possibly be in line for a 4K release? It's one of Goddard's better recognized films after BREATHLESS and CONTEMPT.

Is that backorder usage new? I can't recall seeing them use that before, but it's possible I just never noticed. Definitely helpful to ward off concerns of whether something is truly OOP or not.

I hadn't noticed it as ON BACK ORDER at Criterion itself, too.

I wrote Jon to ask about it.

I think they've been distinguishing between OUT OF PRINT and just out of stock for awhile. Though perhaps with different terminology. But I may be hallucinating like an AI!

In two different locations on the title page, so I think it's pretty definitive!

Allow me to clarify: I wrote Jon to ask about when they are expecting more to be in stock.

Mulholland Drive is probably the best one to get an idea of what Lynch is about while still being tethered enough to "normal" filmmaking to work as an introduction. Blue Velvet is a step toward "normal," Lost Highway is a step toward "Lynchian."

Elephant Man and Straight Story are too "normal" to give you a good sense of Lynch. Eraserhead and Inland Empire are too out there to make good starting points. Dune is just bad. I'm not sure where I'd put Wild at Heart on the scale, but I don't think it's as good a film as Mulholland, Velvet, or Highway.

Made a list a few weeks ago, as it usually gets to the sale and I've completely forgotten what it is I was looking for.

I'll probably get a few more at some point, but this is what I've gone for so far:

I hope not. It's quintessential Godard.

I can let you borrow a copy if it doesn't come back

That reminds me I need to watch it again. I love how atmospheric and surreal it is in parts.

If these 50% off sales didn't exist I would own very few of their releases. Does anyone actually pay full price?

I've only paid higher prices for a few of the ones going OOP like Harold and Maude and Nashville (think they were $31 at B&N), but even when I preordered from Amazon, it was because of a deal they had. Still happy that I managed to grab The Third Man way back in the day for about $16.

I mean, not anymore? 50 percent off is just too attractive. But I started collecting Criterions in the laserdisc age - they were the first thing I really collected - and there was pretty much no alternative but to pay full list price. And we’re talking monstrously more expensive, not just in 80s and 90s dollars, but in absolute dollars. A standard special edition ran $125. In 1986. And we paid it.

So when I see someone griping about a $60 list price on Brazil, well, I do understand. But I paid $150(!) for it in the 90s, and we’re talking, $300 today? It’s practically an affordable hobby by comparison now.

I'll rewatch it in October. It perfectly transports the horror of war.
