I'd love to see Hitchcock's Spellbound re-enter the collection with at least a blu-ray. And also, a few more off-the wall suggestions: Marie Antoinette (2006) on 4k and re-mastered bluray, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008), and Top Hat (1935).

House Party isn't one that does it for me but is a monumentally important film, broad accessible comedy or not. Black agency in mainstream film had until that point been very conditional - outside of underground film and blaxsploitation, even huge megastars like Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy were often kept on a very short leash and when they attempted to hit out as writer-directors there was what felt like industry sabotage to paint them as egotists with an Icarus complex. House Party finally took what had been happening in music for decades and applied it to studio film - the result being an undiluted product of people answering to nobody except their own creative instincts, and the huge financial success of this approach massively changed the entertainment industry in terms of how people of colour were then able to kickstart their own projects.
Napoleon Dynamite (which is 21 years old now, thank you) typifies a group of films that represented the DVD boom, a fascinating bubble in Hollywood history in which leftfield indie films and mid-budget experiments were emboldened to exist and be greenlit, because the DVD releases became more important than their theatrical runs and were successful enough to make hits out of what otherwise would have been flops in any other era. As a result this created a good couple of dozen films which were objectively of a high quality, important for the revolution they represented, and absolutely are of a feel and standard that would qualify them for Criterion consideration - others might include Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, Superbad, Idiocracy, Sideways, Jennifer's Body, District 9, Lost In Translation, several Gondry films etc etc etc. Some of these films already are Criterions - Life Aquatic, Punch-Drunk Love! - and whether you like it or not this is an era of filmmaking which is going to feature more highly in the Criterion Collection in the coming years. So, yeah, House Party and Napoleon Dynamite. Great choices. |

House Party was also one of 25 movies to be added to the National Film Registry back in 2022. Others that year include When Harry Met Sally, Charade, Iron Man, Carrie, and Superfly. Films are selected for their cultural, historic, or aesthetic importance.

I doubt this would happen anytime soon but I’m still going to keep wishing for The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. Just recently watched that and was quite won over.

It’s criminal how long it has taken Birth to get a Blu-Ray. They should pair it with a new release of Sexy Beast (not same set but release both in the same month).
I would also love an upgrade of Beast Boys Video anthology. Don’t know if possible but speaking of upgrades of music videos. A Blu-Ray upgrade of the directors label series of music videos. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directors_Label |
