Well... I only have four Criterions. They're OK, but I prefer Masters of Cinema, as they're cheaper, more collectable (there is over 600 CCs, which is a collection that is pretty much impossible to complete unless you are rich or have no friends), and have a better selection of blind-buy films.

Being British, I think Terrance Davies is a great director. Distant Voices Still Lives is a better place to start from than The Long Day Closes.

Doesn't this film have a really awful transfer? Is it in your top 5 more for the film itself rather than transfer and quality?

Eh, I don't know, I can't really see myself watching them again, to be honest.

They're available on Hulu if you want to check them out ahead of time before you make a definitive purchase. Free one-week membership.

The transfer is not as bad as it is made out to be.

This might have been asked already, but are there any online coupon codes working right now for the sale?

I remember someone posting comparisons and the Criterion version looked like it had a photoshop filter applied, like a watercolour blotchy one?

DVDBEAVER screens doesn't show it much but what I saw on here was embarrassing really..

The Black and whites are stronger and look better on the Criterion version over the comparison, its just that weird blotchy filter effect O__o

Like the love for Yi Yi! One of my favourite's and a movie I discovered through Criterion. Recently watched Madame de and liked it a lot. Will wait for a better transfer (from any studio) though.

And yes, the coupons are working online. I was able to get a 15% off coupon to accept last night. It is only off one item but better than a slap in the face with a wet fish

Yi Yi is a phenomenal film. I didn't quite grasp it's magnificence on the first watching. I prefer A Brighter Summers Day, but both are beautiful epics, that show the pure brilliance of the Taiwanese New Wave. Hou Hsiao-Hsien is legendary too, although I'm glad Tsai-Ming Liang isn't in the Criterion Collection. His motto is "If you drink, you will cry or piss", so his films contain a lot of crying and a lot of pissing. His films are dull, pretentious, pointlessly long, over stylized and a bit stupid. Taiwanese cinema is a goldmine of breathtaking films.

It's a very good film and one of the best of the 90s.

If you want to count all the DVD releases, there are over 700 titles (including ones that are OOP). But in terms of Blu-ray releases, there are actually fewer than 300 so far. They haven't even caught up to the number of their laserdisc releases yet.

I have to disagree with this. The transfer is waxy and detail-obscuring to the point that it detracts (and distracts!) from the film.

That stinks that it is only 15% one item. Better than nothing I guess.

Damn. Wish I would have applied the July 4th coupon to my order. Last few sales didn't accept coupons so I didn't bother. Live and learn.

My 5 essential Criterions:
  1. Seven Samurai
  2. The Seventh Seal
  3. Night of the Hunter
  4. The Thin Red Line
  5. Three Colors

I think all three films are quite decent.p, though the only one I genuinely liked liked from the set was Stromboli.
