The perfect time to stock up on provisions for the long nights to come. Criterion has landed, Kino is in transit:

My big, fat order got here yesterday. I've only just now been able to put it down and tell the world.

I say if you like the movie a lot and wanna own the best possible current release then pull the trigger.

The price dropped on one of these Atlantic Oskar shelving units, so I pulled the trigger and picked one up. Now all of my snobby, bratty Criterion's have been separated from the rest of the collection. Was getting a lot of complaints, particularly from the Kino's

I have to admit that I am unfamiliar with Fellini's work. I bought the set because it looks cool and it has received high praise, plus I got it at a great price with the 50% off sale and $40 off with additional credits.

Thus far I have watched 8 1/2 and Variety Nights. I have been disappointed.

My 25 year-old son and I watched 8 1/2. We kept looking at each other in disbelief that this is such a highly rated film. I understand that some of these films have to be watched more than once, and I'm assuming that is most definitely true about 8 1/2.

Variety Nights was okay. Certainly not something that I would ordinarily seek to watch again.

In 2008, when I started collecting DVDs, HD DVDs, and Blu-Rays, I basically bought anything that interested me at all. I went crazy. And I ended up with a lot of movies that I'll likely never watch again. And a lot of movies I still haven't watched. But a few years ago I decided that I would no longer buy something unless I knew I liked it. My public library has almost everything, so with that, plus Netflix, The Criterion Channel, Prime, and Disney+, I can usually watch almost everything before I buy it.

But for some reason I decided to buy the Fellini set without having watched one film. And I'm afraid I might be in for a disappointment. Yes, I could always sell the set, but I never sell any of my movies.

Anyway, that's where I am at.

BTW, movies are art and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm not insulting anyone or putting anyone down. I'm simply identifying my reactions thus far.

8 1/2 is a masterpiece, but it certainly took more than one viewing for me to see that. It's a strange film certainly, and probably not the best place to start with Felllini. I would recommend reading up a little on the film, as it's possible some things may have been confusing for you as they were for me after my first viewing.

For a newcomer, I'd go with Nights of Cabiria, and/or La Dolce Vita. If you still don't care for them, then perhaps Fellini just isn't for you.

To each their own, of course, so this was the only thing you said that confused me. Why keep anything you don't actually want?

Actually, I did see Nights of Cabiria on CC. I enjoyed it, nothing more. And I did do some reading on 8 1/2 after watching it and I plan to watch it again. I realize that some films may take more than one viewing.

Based upon your recommendation I'll give La Dolce Vita a try next. Maybe tonight.

For a few reasons. First, I hate to say goodbye to any part of my collection. Second, I'm lazy, at least when it comes to selling stuff for which there is little to no money to be made. Obviously, that wouldn't be true in this case, as I could probably sell this for more than what I actually paid. But then I'd have to list it, package it, and, like I said, I'm lazy.

Lastly, I know things change. And maybe what I don't like today will be something I will like tomorrow.

Plus, it looks cool in the Man Cave.

I picked up Satyricon as part of this gigantic DVD set many years ago, and caught La Dolce Vita on Prime recently. Didn't care for either of them.

It was right as I was starting to get into films, so it was a good way of getting a lot of good films with decent variety. Some were awful, some were great, others were anywhere in between. As you'd expect really, for a box of that size.

I've since upgraded Woman in the Window, Night of the Hunter, The Killing, 12 Angry Men, Paths of Glory, Witness for the Prosecution, Some Like it Hot, The Apartment, One Two Three, The Great Escape, Persona, The Fortune Cookie, Good the Bad and the Ugly, and The Wilby Conspiracy to Blu-ray or better.

Received my flash sale order this past Friday. Unfortunately “Every Man for Himself” came with a damaged case and torn cover art the disc is fine. I e-mailed Criterion Saturday afternoon and got an automated response, that basically said we are getting a lot of e-mails and we don’t know when we will get to yours. No big deal. I get it, staffing is an issue for just about every company right now and in the grand scheme of things a damaged movie case isn’t the end of the world and I can still watch the movie. I figured I would hear back by mid-week, but this morning I got a response sating that they are shipping out a replacement case and cover art.
1st is was nice that they have their e-mail set-up to automate a response to acknowledge they received the e-mail and they will respond as soon as they can. 2nd was not excepting an actual response from customer service on a Sunday. Thank you Criterion for you great customer.

Just watched Rififi and loved it. I'm pretty late to the game to a lot of the noir films from the era, but so much of it is golden including Rififi. A solid film in nearly every regard and a great release by Criterion. I owe this experience to MifuneFan who suggested it.

Sometimes you have to realize these movies were made 60+ years ago and try to understand how groundbreaking they were then and ahead of their time.
Not for everyone tho.
