HK era John Woo has been a mess in the US in terms of the releases. The Killer might be one of the worst Blu-rays of all time, and Hardboiled has a BROWN BAR running in the bottom of the screen. Never seen that before. Two of the best action films of all time and this is the best we can get?

Would love to see these get the proper love they need as well the Better Tomorrow films and Bullet in the Head. Either way, while watching the Once Upon a Time in China films, I started getting a little frustrated thinking about John Woo on Blu-ray.

Finzi-Continis received a French release in October, apparently from an new 4K restoration, so an English-friendly edition could be forthcoming.

Yikes! Those prices now.
Is it the only Criterion, other than the semi-Criterion The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, to have a slipcover?

Francois Truffaut's The Last Metro is the only other one I can think of. Luckily I bought that Time Bandits a few years ago before the prices went all large fireworks display like.

I have both of those (still wrapped) but just assumed they were digipaks. Anyway, here’s the early Christmas presents I got from the recent B&N sale:

Citizen Kane's "slipcover" is a digipak component that makes the package complete like their comparable slipcovers and such.
Time Bandits' slipcover was a limited time bonus deal that went over a plain Scanovo case. Without it looks like any other basic Criterion disc.
Criterion has very few releases like that.

The Royal Tenenbaums DVD has that slipcase which is not necessarily needed for the packaging to be complete (and removed for the blu-ray upgrade).

It's still a slipcover. Their other digipaks use slipboxes.

Back in the day, the Killer and Hardboiled Criterion DVDs were sold at extremely high prices. I seem to recall some restoration work on one of them, but both current blu-rays are very poor. I bet the license is cost prohibitive based on work needed, but that is only a guess.
