I know Criterion doesn't normally focus on the kinds of movies that Star Wars is, and I totally get that. I guess this is just me feeling those movies are important enough that I felt if any big budget sci-fi blockbuster deserved it, I feel it would be Star Wars.
Star Wars on Criterion? Not a chance, never was, never will be.

What the hell is A New Hope?

Look, I know it was released as Star Wars, but I have no idea who will get confused by that and who won't, so I just call it A New Hope. But I'm sure you really wanted your internet points so I'll let you have it since you went so far as to bold the two titles in your post.

Also, I dunno. Criterion put out Armageddon, so anything is truly possible.

He knows. He's just trying to be funny since it didn't have "A New Hope" as it's subtitle when it first released in 1977.

Criterion is the company that recently released a blu-ray of Miller's Crossing with some dialogue snipped off some 30 odd years after the original film because the director felt like it.

Even in the unlikely instance that they get a shot at Star Wars, which has had a gazillion home video releases thus far, if anyone thinks that they are going to get the original theatrical release versions through Criterion (which I assume is what is being referred to by justice), they are seriously deluding themselves.

Shared in the Miller’s Crossing thread, Muck47 has detailed the over 70 mostly tiny changes to Criterion’s director’s cut.

There's no way Star Wars would've ever made it into the collection. Not now, not ever. These movies made Fox (and now Disney) so much money, there's no way they would ever license it out or let a boutique label put out their own edition. We wouldn't get a Criterion of Star Wars just as much as we'd never get a Criterion of a movie like Jaws or Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Godfather. They're just movies that don't get licensed out to smaller labels, they're too much of a cash cow for their respective studios.

Ratcatcher was on my radar for a long time but I never pulled the trigger until watching Morvern Calllar.... Damn, what a great movie, I wish I had gotten it earlier.

It's not just Star Wars. Any huge Hollywood release has almost a 0% chance of making it to Criterion. I don't see that as problematic, as long as there is an excellent release. Criterion is not the only one who can produce an excellent release.

I didn't realize the TV cut of Fast Times at Ridgemont High was included in the release until popping it in this weekend. Open Matte too!

I'm just doing a bit of shameless self-promotion and sharing a piece I wrote on Alea's Memories of Underdevelopment:

the tv version of fast times at ridgemont high features some edited and alternate footage that is not present in the original theatrical version of the film. The tv version is ninety-five minutes long (01.35.07), which means that it is approximately five minutes longer than the theatrical version.

Criterion at least got through three James Bond movies before Cubby Broccoli pulled the plug on that arrangement.

They're normally on Tuesdays, but there's usually a heads-up email at some point, right? Trying to figure out if there's still a chance of it being this week or not.

Some select people on the Criterion mailing list should receive an email sometime the day before a flash sale starts. I've never gotten one, but people will report it here if they get one.

Seems likely that the sale will be tomorrow, so if it is, I presume that we'll see reports of those emails this evening.

Emails have usually been sent by 8pm ET at least for the last few sales.

Before that sometimes their Social Media sites might drop a hint or Criterion.com Forum. Some sales weren't known until a few minutes before going live.

Criterion really got their hooks into those first Bond films at the right time, with the Bond series at a deeply uncertain point following the box-office failure of the Dalton films.
