The last time we had 2 from the same director in a month was man push cart and chop shop

I do too. However, if Criterion would release it as some point, I would definitely buy there’s also. Got to support these releases whenever we can.

Real psyched about Not a Pretty Picture. This one has been pretty hard to see, at least from what I’m aware of. Any one out there ever see this before?

I asked Martha Coolidge about this a few years ago and she was pretty tight lipped about it, knowing now, understandably so.

I scored a rare one sheet of this too.

I caught a screening of Born in Flames about a decade ago on Natl Woman’s Day w Borden in attendance in Detroit. She is originally from the metro-Detroit area.

Not really sure what was going on, but during the Q&A a bunch of women in the audience started verbally attacking her. They all ended up getting up and walking out like she was Seinfeld. Really weird, considering the holiday and that BIF is considered to be a feminist film. One of the more odd things I experienced at a screening.

Everything else about it sounds great, and the price when it is released will undoubtedly be significantly lower than the MSRP. But leaving out 90 of the shorts is hard to fathom. Hopefully that is an error.
----------------
I agree with everything except your final thought - I doubt it's an error by the way things are trending with the major studios.
Streaming has taken over. Issuing DVD's and blu-rays is extra income but no longer the mainstream thinking.
Owners of material (programs, movies) are realizing they're leaving money on the table if they don't protect what they own and most are noticing the trend that's begun - take what you own away from other streaming service, renew copyrighted licensing, put it on your own streaming service, whether you own that service or share ownership.
What did he say?
It's simply this: say you love 5 programs, and to watch those 5 programs, you have to pay Netflix to watch one show, Hulu to watch one show, Amazon Prime for one show, Apple+ for one show, and broadcast TV for another show. At some point, you're going to be spending as much or more than you did for cable, and you're going to want to watch your show - and those billionaires know it.
The disc manufacturing isn't dead (unless you're waiting for WWE events on disc, new Doctor Who on disc, the final two seasons of Young Sheldon on blu-ray as only season 6 was available only on DVD no blu-ray, etc.) but many are now releasing programs on discs and watching the sales numbers, the reviews, the chatter (or buzz as it's called)... and this way, they know if it's worth it to upgrade the program to make it wanted by some service, and if it's profitable.
Yes, there were a lot more to the Stooge library that could have been a part of this, and if it sells well, we usually expected it to be a double-dipping kind of thing where an entire collection would get issued in the future if sales went well.
Now, the buyer is the guinea pig, regardless of the 100th Anniversary promotional stuff... because if this sells well, it's off to a streaming service for big bucks, and probably not to end up on your shelf at home.
Pay attention people - the warning flags are flying - don't sell your collections if you want to save money down the road as property rights / copyrights and other expenses are going up.
Some due to all of those union strikes for writers, actors, motion picture staff... but also because of that one word.
Greed.

And so far, only the NFL and the WWE appear to get away with the one thing that normally makes your product valuable - the number of people watching.
Example: Remember that KC Chiefs playoff game that was only available on Peacock last January?
Not even half of the number of people who would have seen it on broadcast TV saw it, but they (the billionaires) considered that game on a streaming service a success.
Netflix is taking WWE Monday Night RAW away from broadcast TV, and for a price that only a billionaire could afford to pay.
How many people do you think would actually protest by cancelling these streaming services as a way of shutting down this whole idea of exclusive streaming rights?

Good luck with that, and good luck in obtaining more of what you want on the disc format.
I honestly mean that because I was hoping for a few things on disc, too, so I wouldn't have to pay some streaming service another month for one lousy TV show.
Many people can't pay their bills and still pay one month to watch something (just like those who have the nice cell phone, but think they won't lose their apartment,,, until they do).

------------------------

Semi-true.
It may or may not be Sony's call.
Look at what Disney is doing and perhaps you'll see it's not all Sony, who is now supposed to be taking the Disney product to market.
So... where's the new Doctor Who ?
Is that Sony's fault, or Disney (who gives Sony the marching orders on what to publish) ?

PS: The entire Columbia library is only partially licensed to Sony, and it isn't clear public information what the details are in licensing as of this date.
The man's gone crazy! He can't be stopped!

Niche months are fun too. July's slate is their big crowd pleaser this summer.

I’m thinking they’re hoping sales of Mother will piggyback off of Real Life. I’m embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t even heard of Mother and I thought I knew everything Brooks directed

The 4K restoration looks good projected, although I don’t believe A Canterbury Tale was a 4K remaster for Cinema Unbound.

It didn't get a Blu-ray release from First Run at all, never mind one that was readily available when the Criterion was announced.

They lost the rights to it. Their site actually says this on the page:

Quote:
After 25 years, our rights have lapsed to this title. Please look out for a re-release from another company in the months ahead.

Born in Flames does not have a Blu-ray listing on their site, just VOD options.

Could have been a package deal, either Paramount or Brooks requested a deal for Real Life had to include Mother. Or someone at Criterion really likes Mother as they've run it on the Channel a few times.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Brooks himself had a hand in making it happen. Both releases coming at the same time, both supervised by Brooks, and both having original poster art, etc..

Just saw the program for Il Cinema Ritrovato 2024, and listed under the "restorations and rediscoveries" section is a listing for Pépé le Moko (1937) in what may apparently be a new restoration.

There's also a listing for a newly restored Fox Film Corporation pre-code, Man Trouble (1930), so depending on Criterion/Disney's relationship, that may or may not be an option as well.

Discussing the history of First Run titles that end up with Criterion, from DVD to BD-R, isn’t a non-sequitur. Working Girls also appears to be a former First Run title (but was licensed directly from Borden.)

Hope whoever won the Criterion Channel charter member trip to the Criterion closet is able to go in person and shares anything they saw tacked to the walls or laying on any tables or on any screens.
