Mind that it has a different color grading. There are accusations of teal revisionism from certain quarters, but as per the wording on the blurb:
Quote:
The restoration of Blue was supervised by director of photography Slawomir Idziak; the restoration of Red was supervised by cinematographers Piotr Sobocinski Jr. and Michael Sobocinski, sons of director of photography Piotr Sobocinski; and an archival 35mm theatrical print was used as a color reference for White.

The new grading has a tone of evidence to back up its legitimacy, and the Blu-ray of Blue is horribly misframed.

Agreed. The Etaix set is in my top Criterion list. Wonderful films, the restorations are excellent, and I think it's the only time a director created the cover art. (Etaix was a graphic designer and did poster art for some of Tati's films)

I imagine it's between pressings. A lot of older UK releases have been harder to find, but are slowly becoming available again after the switch from Sony to Spirit Entertainment as the distributor. You could reach out to mulvaney@criterion.com to find out for sure though, they're usually pretty good about responding.

Has someone over here seen Ishanou (The chosen one)? The premise sounds interesting and I just noticed it's restored in 4K.

A couple of the Satyajit Ray releases (Charulata, Devi, & The Hero) use his art for the covers, even though some are slightly redesigned.

I forgot about Ray! Being a former graphic designer myself, I always love it when I find out filmmakers were in the same profession. Certainly explains a lot about the calibre of their work.

Think subtitlers of Japanese should just write the names with surnames first. Hearing it in the local order while reading the other way around just makes it weird.

Nope, they should do it in the way it makes sense to English speakers, most of who are used to putting the name first and the surname later. Even the grammar and syntax of other languages is different, doesn't mean that subtitlers should make sentences that look totally awkward in English.

Why does Criterion not translate every time a Japanese says "Yes?" Or every time a Spanish speaker says "Yes" or "Thanks?" Because they know even English speakers know what they are saying. There are also examples of subs being omitted because the context makes what's being said obvious, but I can't remember them. Surnames coming first in Japan is common knowledge too or will be learned after watching only a few movies. Reading the correct order while hearing in that order should also make remembering the name easier.

I'm just curious, are there other Criterion 4K titles apart from Picnic at Hanging Rock, where an argument can be made that the bluray is better than the 4K? Or is that one an anomaly?

Not to mention that when Yao Ming was playing in the NBA, he was just called "Yao Ming" and had "Yao" on the back of his jersey and everyone was fine with it.

Whenever Japanese wrestlers appeared in Ring of Honor they would always have the match graphic one way and the ring announcing the other way and I have no idea to this day which is correct for any of those guys.

I don't own it, but both comments on reddit and the review here on bluray.com point to excessive DNR.

First, revisiting an older conversation, my guess for the Seven Samurai 4K is November. It also wouldn't shock me if by then they have Godzilla: Minus One out on 4K and possibly 3D (that would be only their second or third 3D release).

Which we're pretty much starved here when it comes to Japanese films from Criterion.

Yeah, Svet's admittedly the most notable example of a reviewer whose reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. I passed on over 40 solid discs based on his reviews, including Three Colors. I still think his settings are royally effed up.

Also, are we thinking Friday the 14th or Monday the 17th for announcements?
