They did, and also funding a 5-part documentary which premieres in October, so it makes sense to keep it as an exclusive for the moment and drive subs. In other words, money isn't the key driver, exclusivity is. Regardless, I'm still hopeful that at some point Apple will bundle both and whatever else Scorsese may deliver under their banner for a Criterion release.

Speaking of which, never mind KOTFM, which I rank as a lesser entry in his filmography, but fingers crossed for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

My Dad took me to see my first Scorsese, Taxi Driver in 73.
[Show spoiler]Filmed in the neighborhood in which he grew up (and lived around the block from the Scorsese's), he relished pointing out the parish and school he attended and served as an altar boy (the original St. Patrick's).

But it was my Mom who I accompanied to see Alice a year later, and as I remember it, we walked out and she said, "Wasn't she something?
"
Woah you saw it 3 years before it even came out? Thats crazy!

Default Right Year, Wrong Film

You're absolutely right, but it was the right year, wrong film, as it was Mean Streets. That's what I get for multitasking at work and posting here.

Most importantly, I remembered the right church and grounds, as that would have been a sin.

I did see Taxi Driver with my Dad, which I remember feeling a bit uncomfortable due to the subject matter as I was older and a little more self-conscious.

The first Scorsese film I saw on my own, without my parents, was Raging Bull, with my then girlfriend.

- Stanley Kubrick in Black & White 4K Box Set: Killer’s Kiss, The Killing, Paths of Glory, Lolita and Dr. Strangelove

Others I considered:

- Memento 4K
- Insomnia (Nolan) 4K
- The Night of the Hunter 4K upgrade
- Koyaanisqatsi 4K upgrade
- The Legend of Billie Jean 4K
I was thinking they'd save NETWORK for the 50th anniversary in 2026 despite the completed 4K DCP but man I'd be ecstatic if we got it this year.

Also wonder when Umbrella will finally give us details on their MEMENTO 4K release?

I was thinking Umbrella would release WAKE IN FRIGHT 4K themselves here via their VinSyn deal, but the fact that has yet to happen leads me to believe it's totally with Criterion in the US.

Criterion won't outdo the Umbrella release, however.

In addition to The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, I hope that Criterion will release a 4K of O Brother, Where Art Thou? with substantial new special features. I know that Criterion releases don't necessarily tie in with anniversaries, but the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release of OBWAT? is December 2025.

I'm not feeling great today since I have the flu, so I am going to ask if they can delay the announcements to Monday.

If you have a fever, the only cure is Criterion announcements!

When Criterion announced Fires on the Plains I told myself I wouldn't say anything bad about Criterion for 3 months, but even if they don't announce any new to HD Japanese films today, I think I'll go easy on them since they are bringing back the Eclipse label.

I hope the November announcements come very soon. I'd like to get a jump on calculating the Barnes and Noble half off pricing for November.

But does that mean I get only 50% of the disc?

While I too would love a 4K version of O BROTHER, WHERE ARE THOU that might be pretty difficult, because it seems it was the first feature film that was created finished entirely with a Digital Intermediate. A 2K DI:

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
After shooting tests, including film bipack and bleach bypass techniques, Deakins suggested digital mastering be used. Deakins spent 11 weeks fine-tuning the look, mainly targeting the greens, making them a burnt yellow and desaturating the overall image in the digital files. This made it the first feature film to be entirely color corrected by digital means, narrowly beating Nick Park's Chicken Run. O Brother, Where Art Thou? was the first time a digital intermediate was used on the entirety of a first-run Hollywood film that otherwise had very few visual effects. The work was done in Los Angeles by Cinesite using a Spirit DataCine for scanning at 2K resolution, a Pandora MegaDef to adjust the color, and a Kodak Lightning II recorder to put out to film.
More info from American Cinematographer at the time

https://theasc.com/articles/o-brothe...graphy-deakins

25 year old digital technology, pretty much all of which will be obsolete a quarter century on--so it's not like you can just run the same files through newer versions of the software and output a 4K at four times the resolution, with matching color grading and higher res digital FX. The info just isn't there right now: the theatrical release picture info is locked at 2K. And likely lower quality 2K at that.

Theoretically--if the cut OCN exists--you could go back to that, do a 4K scan of the OCN, then try to recreate all the intermediate steps to get a new 4K version that accurately reflects the theatrical release version of 2000. But studios apparently won't do that even for big blockbusters, let alone a smaller art film. It any still exists maybe you could scan a printing negative with all the color correction already applied. But that will still be a 2K resolution, not a 4K. I suppose you could upscale that scan

I'd love to be wrong. Love to have a stunning 4K version of O BROTHER. But I suspect the reason it doesn't already exist is the technological limitations inherent in the original production process.

Pretty sure the master used for the Blu-ray was from a new scan of the negative.

I’m getting nervous that we aren’t getting announcements today, only cause nothing at all has leaked. Usually at least one title is leaked by now.

I hope I’m wrong

Damnit, just came into the thread to make a joke about what time it'll be when people start saying they'll be announcements today!
