Also, I haven't seen Nashville either (I'm only 17 though, I'm just watching a bunch of classics for the first time) but I've been wanting to see it for a while. A Criterion release would be great.

And I don't care what Kevin Smith says, Magnolia is amazing.

You've got sterling tastes for a 17 year old...hell, you've got sterling tastes for a 27 year old too. I seriously thought you were older Starman.

If nothing else, you'll really appreciate the formal daring of that Robert Altman movie. It's a very ambitious film in so many ways, especially the sound design.

Hey, thanks! I guess I do have a unique taste in film for a 17 year old (almost 18, but still). I'm rarely interested in newer blockbusters and studio driven films like so many people are. At the end of the day, I find that those films won't speak to me as well as a truly great piece of cinema. Besides, who's going to remember The Conjuring 10 years from now?

It's honestly the best horror film of the 21st century, in my opinion.

If the studios keep putting out quality horror films, then I'll be very happy. I do agree with you, though, I pretty much hate all new blockbusters and many new films in general. There's always a large handful of selections each year that I do enjoy.

I read this short book (140 pages) by Christina Lane on the film and I thought it was a very decent read. I especially loved how she dove into the role media plays in the film-especially what it suggests.
Nice! Honestly there are just some movies out there that aren't movies anymore but masterpieces of art. Magnolia is one such masterpiece. It is on another level of cinema, in a league of its own. I don't know if its the way its edited, the pacing, the character studies, or whatever it is, but the film rises to heights that I've never seen before in another film. It truly is something that is nearly beyond cinema. It mainlines right into the apex of the human condition. It is the best film I've ever seen that combines so many different characters in one certain city (Los Angeles) and brings them all together somehow with this amazing, almost mythical fairy tale sequence that is beyond human comprehension. The buildup of the film alone is worth it.
[Show spoiler]Nevermind the payoff, and there is one indeed. This is redemption of the highest order. The characters are redeemed, saved, healed and so forth in ways rarely seen before in filmmaking all in different circumstances, but all in similar manners.

Magnolia takes all of our fear, joy, pain and pleasure and creates the ultimate film that runs the gamut of humanity.

Yahoo!!! You can add highlighter to Orson Welles cap for all I care-you are, and will always be cool in my book. Magnolia is a film I don't even know where to begin with because it is so dense. Supposedly Paul Thomas Anderson locked himself in a cabin for a week while working on the screenplay, and it's kind of notable. It is the work of someone dizzily spinning out of control, but unlike something equally foolish (Southland Tales, which is flawed but inyeresting BTW), Anderson sticks his landing. Keeps things both dramatically interesting, yet dazzling like the finest opera or Scorsese film.

I really enjoy James Wan. He's probably the best horror director in the longest time.

As far as Ti West goes, House of the Devil was decent from an 80ish vibey perspective and I did think the ending was very creepy. However, I couldn't tolerate V/H/S at all and I had no desire to see The Innkeepers.

Actually, that's one of his better films!

My favorite, though, remains CONTEMPT -- and Criterion's old DVD looks much better than Lionsgate's Blu-ray overall.

Does anybody know when the B&N 50% off Criterion sale is over? They're supposed to call me in a couple days when they get a couple more copies of The Devil's Backbone. I hope the sale is still going on when I pick that up. I grabbed Carlos and Following today for $45 total. I'm thinking about going back for Shallow Grave, Fear and Loathing, and Videodrome.

And speaking of NASHVILLE, although I've never been particularly crazy about country music in general, I bought the LP soundtrack album for NASHVILLE and listened to it frequently, even transferring it to cassette for more convenience (way back when).

I was lucky enough to see a packed theatrical screening of NASHVILLE in conjunction with a Writers Conference where Joan Tewksbury was one of the guests. Very much in the Altman style, it's a long, meandering, but hypnotic film, with some amazing performances and unexpectedly amazing music written and performed by the actors themselves ("Tapedeck in his Tractor" is one of my favorites -- sure wish Ronee Blaklee had made some more movies). Sadly the album and my autographed paperback edition of the screenplay were lost in a flood back in the 90s. Assuming that cartoon clue is really for NASHVILLE, I'll certainly be looking forward to a Criterion Blu-ray edition. It'll make a great (if lengthy) double-feature with TAXI DRIVER.

We have been MAGNOLIZED!

Magnolicious Magical Magnolia.

Magpies can't even eat mangos without magnanimous magnolias.

Magicians aren't as magnificent as Magnoli'que magazines.

Magnolia is magic! MAGICOLIA!

MAGNOLIA spelled backwards is: AILONGAM.

Imagine if that movie was released on Criterion? One of life's greatest films on life's greatest movie distributor. Nevertheless, we must RESPECT the CLOCK of time and not be cocky about our timers.

We need more of M-A-G.....A

Scorcese never had anything on PT.

PT is short for PURE TALENT.

Pure Talent Anderson, bring us more flowers for our collective hair.

What are peoples thoughts on Robert Altmans Pret-a-Porter? I love his films but the reaction to this sounds pretty bad and it's very long. I want to watch it but keep going for other things off the list and it's just taking up space.

Worth a watch?

Really?

I've seen 2 of Wan's films, Saw, which I found to be trying too hard to be clever (It was merely ok) and Death Sentence, which I F'n hated (so f'n preachy and awful). My estimations of his work are not very high from these viewings.

Ti West on the other hand, imho, is great. I loved both House Of The Devil and The Innkeepers. His sequence of V/H/S was about the most interesting, though not great. His part of The ABCs Of Death was disappointing however though in all fairness, most of that film was pretty crap.
