Also, I haven't seen Nashville either (I'm only 17 though, I'm just watching a bunch of classics for the first time) but I've been wanting to see it for a while. A Criterion release would be great.
And I don't care what Kevin Smith says, Magnolia is amazing. |

![]() If nothing else, you'll really appreciate the formal daring of that Robert Altman movie. It's a very ambitious film in so many ways, especially the sound design. |

![]() If the studios keep putting out quality horror films, then I'll be very happy. I do agree with you, though, I pretty much hate all new blockbusters and many new films in general. There's always a large handful of selections each year that I do enjoy. ![]() |

[Show spoiler] Magnolia takes all of our fear, joy, pain and pleasure and creates the ultimate film that runs the gamut of humanity. |

I really enjoy James Wan. He's probably the best horror director in the longest time.
As far as Ti West goes, House of the Devil was decent from an 80ish vibey perspective and I did think the ending was very creepy. However, I couldn't tolerate V/H/S at all and I had no desire to see The Innkeepers. |

![]() My favorite, though, remains CONTEMPT -- and Criterion's old DVD looks much better than Lionsgate's Blu-ray overall. Last edited by Blu-Velvet; 07-31-2013 at 06:11 AM. |

Does anybody know when the B&N 50% off Criterion sale is over? They're supposed to call me in a couple days when they get a couple more copies of The Devil's Backbone. I hope the sale is still going on when I pick that up. I grabbed Carlos and Following today for $45 total. I'm thinking about going back for Shallow Grave, Fear and Loathing, and Videodrome.

I was lucky enough to see a packed theatrical screening of NASHVILLE in conjunction with a Writers Conference where Joan Tewksbury was one of the guests. Very much in the Altman style, it's a long, meandering, but hypnotic film, with some amazing performances and unexpectedly amazing music written and performed by the actors themselves ("Tapedeck in his Tractor" is one of my favorites -- sure wish Ronee Blaklee had made some more movies). Sadly the album and my autographed paperback edition of the screenplay were lost in a flood back in the 90s. Assuming that cartoon clue is really for NASHVILLE, I'll certainly be looking forward to a Criterion Blu-ray edition. It'll make a great (if lengthy) double-feature with TAXI DRIVER. |

Magnolicious Magical Magnolia. Magpies can't even eat mangos without magnanimous magnolias. Magicians aren't as magnificent as Magnoli'que magazines. Magnolia is magic! MAGICOLIA! MAGNOLIA spelled backwards is: AILONGAM. Imagine if that movie was released on Criterion? One of life's greatest films on life's greatest movie distributor. Nevertheless, we must RESPECT the CLOCK of time and not be cocky about our timers. We need more of M-A-G.....A Scorcese never had anything on PT. PT is short for PURE TALENT. Pure Talent Anderson, bring us more flowers for our collective hair. |

What are peoples thoughts on Robert Altmans Pret-a-Porter? I love his films but the reaction to this sounds pretty bad and it's very long. I want to watch it but keep going for other things off the list and it's just taking up space.
Worth a watch? |

I've seen 2 of Wan's films, Saw, which I found to be trying too hard to be clever (It was merely ok) and Death Sentence, which I F'n hated (so f'n preachy and awful). My estimations of his work are not very high from these viewings. Ti West on the other hand, imho, is great. I loved both House Of The Devil and The Innkeepers. His sequence of V/H/S was about the most interesting, though not great. His part of The ABCs Of Death was disappointing however though in all fairness, most of that film was pretty crap. |
