Even though it doesn't really have anything to do with the film, the cover is such a striking image.

I've given Glass' score for Reggio's next film Visitors a listen, and it's pretty excellent. The movie isn't coming out until next year, but I'm excited to see it (and hopefully he learned something after doing Naqoyqatsi ). The Visitors score is on iTunes if you want to give it a listen.

Thanks again! (Big fan of your Avatar too, BTW. )
Thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely check it out.

Philip Glass' reworking of La Belle et la Bête is the main reason I purchased the blu-ray. I am planning to buy Dracula for the same reason.

Woah, looks like we got a professional bad*ss critic over here. Everyone stop what you're doing and listen very intently. You might learn something from these wise words.

FYI: One of the things I like about Wes Anderson is that he doesn't take himself seriously.

Here's a fun treat for fans of Eyes Without a Face...

A couple of years ago, I went to see Ladytron in concert, and was taking a couple of photos so that I could write a review of the show on a friend's local music website. I transferred the photos from my iPhone to my computer that night, and I immediately thought of Eyes Without a Face when I saw the below photo, because of the way that lead singer Helen Marnie is captured in the strobe lights on the right side of the picture.

That's a good thing. If only his supporters did the same.

Why? Because we prefer to read real, physical books instead of a Kindle?

I mean, you do buy Blu-ray discs, don't you, rather than streaming?

Well, the two Marx Bros. films are owned by Warner, so that's probably not happening, though Criterion did release ANatO on laserdisc.

As they did Umbrellas. Koch released it on DVD. Don't know who owns the rights now.

If you haven't already, you should definitely read Dorothy Hughes' novel In a Lonely Place. It can help pass the time until we get a blu upgrade.
Actually, any of Hughes's novels are very much worth reading.

I saw Seconds for the first time a few nights ago and still I am so dumbfounded at how good this film was. Randolph was superb! He really was able to convey that sense of dread and doom... wish he had played the younger version too. This film was shocking at the time because you never would expect to see Rock Hudson act in a movie like this. Anyway, yes, such a good movie. I'm going to add my review to the "user reviews" section soon for that film. Owl has a review there so far.

So was I. But then, I never made it past the middle of The Two Towers. I couldn't manage to slog my way through Tolkien's overwritten prose. Boromir's funeral, for example, went on endlessly in the book, while it was just right in the film

The ending of The Return of the King in the book never really reverberated with me, but I loved how the movie wrapped everything up.
I just wish that Jackson didn't film five different endings, and then run them all one after the other in the movie.

There have been a handful of movies that have actually improved on the literary source material. The Shawshank Redemption is, perhaps, the finest example.
I have my issues with Shawshank (though all in all, I liked the film), but I think DePalma's Carrie works far, far better than King's novel. And I also think Kubrick made some good changes to A Clockwork Orange (but made some poor changes to The Shining).

But as far as changes being justified by the end product go, I think Blade Runner sucks as an adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, but I for one would not want to live in a world that did not have Blade Runner in it.

It's complicated, but Image doesn't actually own Criterion. What they have is an exclusive distribution deal with Criterion. It's confusing because Image bought out Home Vision Entertainment, which was Janus Films' partner in releasing Criterion on DVD. But, as far as I can tell, Criterion is owned solely by Janus Films.

Default My First Post on Blu-ray.com

Good morning everyone,

I have been lurking on the Criterion forum here for a while. I just finished registering on blu-ray.com, so I could post on this forum. My user name is Meek on criterion.com as well. The 1-2-3-4-5 is a reference to a joke in Spaceballs. The luggage lock combination for Mel Brooks' character was 1-2-3-4-5. All of the other characters commented on how that was a stupid combination when he couldn't hear them. My avatar is a screenshot from Cinema Paradiso, which I don't own on blu-ray. I have a really awesome limited edition of it though. It includes the soundtrack and some Italian recipes I haven't tried yet.

I only have 31 Criterion Blu-ray/DVDs right now in my collection, but I plan to expand it a little during the Barnes and Noble sale coming up. I hope that The Umbrellas of Cherbourg will be released by Criterion soon. It is one of my most wanted titles. I have been sending title suggestions to suggestions@criterion.com that included the following films:

Quiz Show
Dodsworth
I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang
Carmen Jones
The 5 Deadly Venoms
Shaolin Master Killer
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Manhunter
Princess Mononoke
Once Upon a Time in China
Don't Look Now
Dead of Night
In a Lonely Place
The Big Heat
The Fountain
The Decalogue
Kill Bill
Lost in America
Cairo Station
Strange Days
Gattaca

I will be thrilled if just a few of these would get the Criterion treatment. By the way, Thief will be on Encore SU Channel 303 on Suddenlink this coming Tuesday at 10:10 a.m. CT. I wish it were in HD, but I don't want to pass the chance up of seeing it soon. I don't have MGM HD and would like to see it before it is released by Criterion.

Well, I hope I didn't ramble on for too long. I have a lot to say, but I don't want to bore you all to death.

Have a good day,

Meek

Hi Meek, welcome aboard!

You have some pretty good titles listed there... there are many on that list that I'd like to see as Criterion releases, but I can only hope and pray. Thanks for the tip on Thief, but I am just going to wait until January to see this film for the first time on Criterion Blu-ray.

The two Marx bro's films are definitely a no go, but dear god I hope Warner will release them soon. We really need them in hi def and I'm getting really sick of Universal re releasing them in dvd only editions. They've done it twice already and I know they have HD masters of them because I caught a DCP screening of Horse Feathers last winter.

Umbrellas Of Cherbourg should be coming not too long from Criterion as Janus Films just bought the rights to Jacque Demy's films and are touring them around North America now.
Just a matter of waiting now!

There is probably a "no" missing in the sentence.

It's also clear that Criterion has gotten rid of the sepia tint present on both the new Shochiku BD but also the French Carlotta BD that has just been released. I don't know if it was supposed to be there or not, though.

I've done a series of caps for my own review. You can compare the tint of this : http://uppix.net/NUHTzh VS the color scheme of the screenshot 19 from Svet review (I know, one shouldn't compare caps not coming from the same person...).

just saw the tokyo story review as well. sounds like i will upgrade my BFI bluray pretty soon
the bonus features alone would be worth a upgrades.

but is a single bluray enough for a full movie (136min) + over 200 mins of bonus features + commentary track? 0_0
