First of all, this has nothing to do with the Criterion Collection.

Second, I don't think it was shot in a "documentary-type style". Cuaron and Lubezki's previous collaboration, Children of Men, was shot like a documentary. This one was rather classically-filmed, with precise and clear compositions.

I didn't meen it was like a documentary, I just ment there were a few shots that looked like a documentary (the shakey cam moments, the times when there were things nearly hitting the camera.) And plus, I've seen reviews of movies that have nothing to do with criterion on here. Overall, you're a big, stinking poppyhead.

I think its a great idea starting bidding at 99 cents and seeing how it turns out. I definitely think its a better idea having auctions for my DVDs than going to a music exchange store and obtaining a quote (with very little to bargain or negotiate).

This is all food for thought, so again, I appreciate your insight on all this.
No problem. Hope it goes well for you. While you obviously won't get back what you paid for the DVDs, you'd be surprised how much you wind up with. In ten years I haven't paid a cent for dozens of items I've bought on E-bay because I always have enough credit from sales to cover the cost.

Just one warning, if you are tempted to sell stuff that you haven't upgraded to bluray, make sure you really want to get rid of it. Nothing like having seller's remorse.

I bought a Beatles box set (the Stereo Box set) and a Rolling Stones box set (Some Girls) on eBay. Not once was I ripped. Hope you're the same

It's just too bad that my local B&N, with rare exceptions, doesn't seem to stock any Kinos, Cohens, or Olives.
Having said that, I stopped in at the local B&N this evening and found (among other things) three of those "rare exceptions": two Olive titles (High Noon and Rio Grande) and one Kino title (Fear and Desire).

The aforementioned "other things" were Blue Velvet, To Catch a Thief (both of which were 40% off instead of 30%), The Maltese Falcon, and the DigiBook of Full Metal Jacket.

p.s. The Uninvited is either lost or sent somewhere else. I am sorry for the delay. Regardless, we will have a review for it.

Excellent! Looking forward to them!

I saw Frances Ha at the theater and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's one of my favorites of 2013. As far as Like Someone In Love is concerned, do you think the delay in a U.S. Blu-ray is due to Criterion releasing it in the not-so-distant future?

I would love to have a Region Free player so that I could import a lot of the MoC releases. Too bad that would drain my already somewhat drained account.

I do not have any info to share with you at the moment, iScottie

But if a release is announced, you will know.

p.s.
Do you buy DVDs? If yes, you should pick up these two releases (both are Region-A, U.S. product):

Not a problem.

I haven't bought DVDs in quite a while, but I may give those a chance. Of course, I'll always be sure to check Amazon Instant Video or Hulu ahead of time, as I always fear a Blu-ray will be announced for many titles.

Have a great weekend.

I'm curious to see how Like Someone in Love turns out. I have no doubt the picture will be beautiful, but I'm curious what supplements the disc might house. I'll be holding off on it for a few more months on the off chance of a Criterion release though.

Gravity is a beautiful film. I saw it in 3-D, and if I didn't, I think it would lose some of it's beauty. The 3-D really enhances the atmosphere of the movie, which is the best thing about it. It mixes claustrophobic with that feeling that you're gonna be forgotten with awe- inspired visuals. The visual effects are great, and I can see why it took so long to make this film. It's not extremely CGI looking, just a hint. The cinematography is great. It is mainly shot in a documentary- type style, but sometimes it has POV shots (which makes me feel like I'm playing a video game). The movie rarely has cutscenes, which makes me feel like one tiny camera was watching over everything. I can really sympathize with the Sandra Bullock character and what she's going threw, so I really want to see her make it. This is why the movie is so suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. The music is awesome. It really sets the tone for the movie. I love how it builds up, and builds up, and builds up, and... silence. Why? Because they're in space, and sound doesn't travel threw space. I just love that. the conversations she has with George Clooney's character is great. It's very natural, and I feel like they've known each other for a while. I was surprised that
[Show spoiler]they killed of George Clooney's character half way threw the movie. I thought he would come back, especially when we saw him come on board, but then we realized it was just a hallucination. Killing of George Clooney half way threw a movie is a pretty ball-sey move, especially in a big-budget film like this. After something that unexpected, I thought they would kill off Sandra Bullock's character. Actually, I think the movie would have been better if she died, because it wouldn't have been so stereotypical. But what can you do.

In conclusion, this movie is satisfying, gripping, thrilling, and beautiful. If you haven't checked it out, go see it. 8/9
Just saw this as well ... Great movie ... Btw ... Most shots in space ... all CG ... Only the actors faces were shot.

http://www.awn.com/articles/visual-e...eering-gravity

Kinda like saying Life of Pi had great cinematography when 90% of the shots were green screen replacements.

As much as I want to see it again, I can hold off as well.. I've made the mistake of buying too soon before.

Hola. I've had a good day with two films from Criterion Collection directors...

12 Years a Slave
This new film from Steve McQueen, whose debut, Hunger, appears in the Collection, is my favorite work from the director to date, and it is also my favorite movie of 2013 so far. Like McQueen's previous films, this one is difficult to watch, but it is also graced with remarkably beautiful camera work. This time around, the somewhat clinical and detached artistry of McQueen is balanced by a lead actor who provides a strong emotional center. Here is my review of 12 Years a Slave.

Some Like It Hot
Billy Wilder, whose film, Ace in the Hole, is available on Criterion DVD, was in a class all his own. I've been on a recent Wilder kick, having watched Stalag 17 and Sunset Boulevard over the past two weeks, and this recent Blu-ray purchase is another title that I took long enough to check out. Some Like It Hot was not only a lighthearted way to chase down 12 Years a Slave, but it is also an insanely effective movie on all fronts, and it deserves its iconic stature. Marilyn Monroe is a firecracker in her revealing dress, while Tony Curtis (Sweet Smell of Success) and Jack Lemmon never miss a beat with the innuendos that must have been quite risque for their time. Of course, the final line of the movie got some belly laughs out of me. I'm enjoying going through the Blu-ray extras right now.

I'll check out your review after I see it. Glad to see you liked it, though.

Premieres here next weekend, along with Blue is the Warmest Color. Should make a nice double bill.

I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on 12 Years a Slave. It's really something else.

Right now, though, I cannot get over how much I enjoyed Some Like It Hot. I've always seen it at the top of Best Comedy lists, and I can understand why. The movie is hilarious, and it doesn't seem dated at all. The comedic timing is just spot-on the whole while. I've got plenty on my plate right now, but I plan to purchase Billy Wilder's The Apartment at some point during the next few months.

And the film in question, Some Like It Hot, was released by Criterion on LD.

I did not realize that it was a Criterion laserdisc.
