The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is the only Demy film I've seen, but I'm willing to buy the set based on how much I liked it.

Oh, and though I am not interested in the movie, I love the artwork on the Scanners Blu Ray. It's probably my favourite of the month.

Anyway - The Big Chill in July! One of my favorites from the 80s.

I hate when they release box sets and don't have the films available individually. I want to get The Umbrellas of Cherbourg but don't want all the others. Shame.

Any chance to see a young Catherine Deneuve in HD is worthy!
Seriously, I just watched this, for the first time in ages, on TCM and it's just as charming as I remembered it being.
The highlights of the announcements for me are the Demy set and Insomnia. I enjoy Pickpocket but my favorite Bresson of the ones I've seen is Diary of a Country Priest.

While they're in the habit of releasing the laserdiscs they didn't get to do on DVD - Crash.

The Jacques Demy set looks like it will be one of the best releases of the year and I'm sure he'll be a filmmaker that benefits from the HD upgrade. The list of extras is simply staggering (though I am surprised, and dare I say saddened, that it doesn't include Varda's Jacquot de Nantes). Criterion also have the rights to A Slightly Pregnant Man. Hard to see them giving it it's own release so I'm guessing we're going to get an Inessential Jacques Demy set down the line. Maybe Eclipse.

I just knew they would release some heavy hitters in the summer when I have to watch my spending (I am a teacher and don't get paid).

I will probably breakdown and buy Insomnia on release day. I had a feeling this would be coming soon. Hopefully The Vanishing isn't far behind. Love foreign crime thrillers.

The Big Chill would be great to add to my collection as well. I had heard about it for years and never actually saw it until a year or two ago. Excellent film that is worthy of the accolades.

I love just about any Cronenberg film and while Scanners isn't a total classic it will eventually end up in my collection. Is it confirmed that Criterion has the rights to The Brood? I hated that film years ago and sold my DVD but recently rewatched it on TV and liked it. Any chance that Criterion could have the rights to Shivers or Rabid? I would love HD versions of those.

Pickpocket is a great film but I don't think I would really rewatch it so I will probably just rent the Blu Ray from NetFlix.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the greatest things made. I currently have Lola on my DVR, but I think I'll delete it so that I can see it in HD for the first time.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of my favorite films, so the Demy set is the most exciting July release for me. I have Lola on my DVR as well from a TCM recording and I plan to watch it this week. If I love Lola half as much as I love Umbrellas, I think getting the Demy set during a 50% off sale would be a worthwhile purchase. It would be nice for individual film releases to be available though. I have a good feeling that all of the Demy films that I won't be able to see before the set release(the other 4 films) will be above average. I bought the Zatoichi set based off only seeing the first 9 of 25 films, and that turned out well. It is probably my best blu purchase ever.

I have never seen Scanners and Insomnia, so I will try to watch them soon. I am not a fan of The Big Chill or Pickpocket, so I will pass on those. I will probably pick up A Man Escaped soon though.

I totally forgot about today being announcement day, what with me seeing a Criterion film on the big screen. Brazil took up most of my evening.

I think it looks hideous. What was wrong with the theatrical poster for this one? At least Videodrome's box wasn't a jumbled mess.

Thankfully, nothing for me from this month's announcement. I still have a few BR's and DVD's that I did not pick up from Deep Discount today so can still have fun at the B&N Sale.

UMBRELLAS is absolutely one of my favorite films, too, but I can't say I like Demy's other films very much, if at all. I'll still spring for the set during the 50% off sale as I love UMBRELLAS, but the other discs probably won't see much spin in my player.

I love The Umbrellas of Cherbourg but have not seen the other films in the box set. I'll probably work some coupon magic during a B&N 50% off sale and pick it up anyways.

Fred Davis, who designed the art for Insomnia, posted a few alternate covers on his Tumblr. Here's a link.

Ever since I started to buy blu-rays, Pickpocket with Persona and Andrei Rublev have been my most wanted releases. Pickpocket is basically the French version of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment.

I am glad to see two Bresson films in the blu-ray criterion collection. I hope more of his films will be released in the close future. Pickpocket is my favorite of Bresson's films.

I'm not going to pretend that Scanners is some under appreciated art house masterpiece (all Criterion press releases hype their films that way), but it's certainly about more than "a guy who can make heads explode." Thematically it ties in well with other (superior) Cronenberg films like Dead Ringers and Videodrome.
[Show spoiler]Disreputable medical and corporate ethics, definitely. A bit of body horror, but more to do with being able to get inside heads and controlling minds and the repercussions and responsibilities of such than just blowing up people's heads. Women whose unborn children are essentially being experimented on by a pharmaceutical company.
It's cheesy but with enough menace, weirdness and intelligence to make it something more than MST3K fodder.

And the cover is gorgeous you philistines.
