(Pure atmosphere...The Thindersticks).

David Lynch would have loved to direct Bastards. The year's best film

Our review will be up shortly.

I can definitely recommend this as well. Claire Denis is always interesting and doesn't disappoint here, either. I went into this (luckily at the theater) without knowing anything and imho that's the best way to experience this.

Please check out Monsieur Verdoux. It's riddled with dark humor and drama.

I didn't think I was going to be a big fan of it when I first saw it, but I almost immediately found it shooting to the top of my Chaplin list.

I will definitely still watch it at some point since Hulu has it. It was just something I didn't feel confident in buying last year when I got all of the other Chaplin Criterions.

White Material is terrific. Hot, dry, dusty, gloom and doom - I love it.

Isabelle Huppert's performance is great.

White Material is my favourite Denis film after 35 Shots Of Rum. Bastards is my second favourite film of this year too.

Thanks for the information.

I've heard some mixed reviews on it so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it now.

Ah, yes, I should have clarified that. I have. I haven't seen them in years, though, and I'm in the mood for a period piece.

said this before here, but Barry Lyndon is my favorite Kubrick film! a tight narrative and, IMO, the best display of all his technical mastery and style - the zoom outs, the marriage of classical music to the images, every shot framed perfectly.

I need to see it again myself as it has been a few years.

Sometimes I think mixed reviews are better than 90%+ positive reviews. Sometimes this means a film has substance to it. Malick's films usually get mixed reviews.

Oh, B2G1 started already? It's usually right before the Criterion sale.

thanks.. I remember this post now. there's no "clear pattern" at all. Rashomon was released before Hidden Fortress; Throne of Blood before Red Beard and Hidden Fortress; and Kagemusha before nearly all of them.

no evidence here suggests that Red Beard has the best chance of being upgraded next.

Here is the order in which the Kurosawa films have been released on blu-ray:

#267 - Kagemusha August 2009
#52 - Yojimbo March 2010
#53 - Sanjuro March 2010
#2 - Seven Samurai October 2010
#24 - High & Low July 2011
#138 - Rashomon November 2012
#190 - Throne of Blood January 2014
#116 - The Hidden Fortress March 2014

According to this pattern, anything can be next.
